Heres a real good one for someone to figure out. Mitsubishi have had my car (E5) now for 3 weeks unable
to find the problem. The car is still under new car warranty so this is all free to me but just inadequate not having a car avaliable.
The problem : Everytime I turn a corner to the right hand or left hand side a loudish knocking sound is coming from the lower right side of the front suspension. Under warranty , Mitsubishi have replaced both front struts and bushings, had the car on some testing machine which then identified the fault then as the steering rack. Now today they have given me a call stating that its not the steering rack. They are now unable to find the reason for the knocking sound so Im in a bad sitaution....the car is still fully driveable but I want the problem resolved.
Anyone have any ideas that I can slap mitsubishi in the face with ? Help me out !
That's the kind of noises I hate!
At least you've got a warranty but when you don't you really don't know where to start from,
and here in France who should you give the car to check it.
Mitsubishi dealer don't officially know the evo,the rally teams are too busy with the race evo and suspension specialist will give you an appointement after two weeks and then will ask a lot of money for the time spent, but you don't know if they will solve the problem as they don't have all the replacement parts for each car.
I used to own a vr6,and I had a knock when changing direction and the road was not flat, when you go down on a parking ramp for exemple.
Vw had no idea about what it could be,the shocks were new,so I replace the front suspension silent blocs with powerflex ones as they were used but the noise was still there.
Then I had the chassis checked by a specialist but it was not that.
When I sold the car the noise was not sorted.
Maybe it was just the direction box,who knows.
On my evo v I have some noises sometimes,I think is quiet normal as my suspension are stiff and I use the car on back country roads and sometimes the car jumps over a crest and the landings, holes and others are stressing the suspension system.
What is not normal is when, especially on a rally car as the evo,the mechanics or dealers are not able to find out where is the noise coming from.
I don't want to pay a lot of money for the houers they will spend tryng to find out something that they should know,or the parts that they change when they were just ok and the problem is somewhere else.
In UK, you can probably find easely than in France professional people who knows their job!
Sorry, I have no idea.
But, tell them to send it to a suspension specialist (at Mitsi's expense).
Else, tell them to replace the steering rack. I think they will go for the first option.
Put your foot down (on Mitsi's neck, not the fast pedal).
Hi,
I have (or had) a noise that sounds like it was the same but on left hand turns only.
Garage suggested it was something to do with a seal in the damper allowing it to go dry after some time.
This is cured when the car is jacked up (ie for a service) and the suspension fully drops and allows the oil to drain back into the reservoir.
I don't remember the full details but can confirm it goes away if you jack the car up.

Have they checked the spring? It is possible that it doesn't sit in the right way or it has wound itself up (quite common). Just a thought, as I'm sure they have checked; that's if they know what they're doing!
Wild stab here, but I had a similar sound on a car years ago (not an evo). Everytime I turned a corner with lots of lock, especially if the suspension was in bump, it would make a loud knocking sound.
It turned out to be the stick-on balance weights (inside edge) on the wheel being in a position that meant they caught the edge of the steering track rod end. Especially when the suspension compressed and the wheel moved nearer the arm.
Million to one chance, but it happened to me, it could happen again.

Sufferer of weird motoring problems.
Eg: Anyone else ever run over a fish ?!
I have a 5 and have found that the strut mounts fail quickly. At 20k I am on my third set.
Suggest to your dealer that they try a new mount. Better yet replace them with a pillow ball set. The stiff suspension puts unusual loading on the standard top mounts.
Check out the Anti Roll bar bushes, I had one twist out causing the anti roll bar to knock against the clamp on initial movement, I thought it sounded like the top mount at first!
Did anyone have the hks pillow bal top monts fitted. Are they ok for road use and not noisy?
Is it a better choice than the ralliart harder rubber top mounts?
Thanks Guys.... Im taking my baseball bat down there today with a printout of the stuff we have dicussed....
If they cant fix it maybe I should demand a E6? hahahah
I have had the same knocking sound for ages.I have had the rack rebuilt, changed the anti
roll bar bushes and also fitted HKS top mounts and I still have the noise.
Maxi, re HKS top mounts. In my opinion they are ok for road use.The turn in feels better
but that may also be due to the fact that I also fitted Eibach lowered springs.
Maxi, what's wrong with the Proflex topmounts, or have you fitted the dampers with the original ones? I'm getting my back springs changed within the next two weeks. How low is your cars ride height (front/rear)? If you run 2 camber in the front it must be quite low. I was running 1,75 (1 in the back) on the standard suspension and was quite happy with the cars handling. Is yours tailhappy?
My upper mounts are ok,they should be ralliart, but I was just wondering if the hks pillow ball mounts were ok for road use as they really look cool, but some suspension specialist told me that they should be noisy as you don't have any kind of silent bloc.
I don't think that I would change them now but I would like to know how they work and if they can be recommended for every day use.
And if there are no problems on hard use with stiff suspensions as the rigidity is improved but the chassis is nu prepared and there is no roll bars.
I have had the same noise coming from the front end since I had the car. Almost evertyhing up front has been changed and the noise does not go away. I spoke to other EVO owners in Istanbul and they have the same problem. I think this is normal for the EVO. We have to learn to live with it!

if the noise is louder when turning left then i may be able to help, your car has a brace on the subframe running under the exhaust tell the dealer to remove this and try it i think you will be pleasently surprised
I had the same problem with my 5 for ages. I used to get a knocking noise from the offside front when turning right out of junctions and going round small roundabouts, the car was fine otherwise. The strut and lower suspension arm were removed for inspection and refitted by my local garage. The knocking sound was quiter for a while but came back after a few weeks. My mitsi garage were unsure if it was a top mount, strut and even considered the driveshaft. My warranty company would not cover the cost of either part http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/sad1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle > so I reluctantly ignored the noise until I could track down the cause of the problem.
Then one day while I was jacking up the offside front I heard the same sound come from the strut as the car was raised. It was as if the shocky wasnt releasing smoothly and it gave off the same slight knocking noise as it lifted. Several weeks later to my surprise the noise completely disapeared [img]http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/happy1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >[img]http://www.ltregister.f9.co.uk/graphics/happy1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle >. I am baffled as to the original cause of the noise.
Changed my brushes and it made no difference, in my case its come down to the top mounts which im going to get changed. Only started to make the noise when i changed the suspesnion.
