Glad to hear you finally got it sorted and can hopefully get to enjoy the car now.

Did you have to stump up for the new mechatronic unit or did Mitsu - as I know those things aren't cheap?

Mitsubishi discounted the cost of the Mechatronic unit and associated parts by 50%, including the labour for fitting, ended up costing me the best part of three grand. Better than the cost of a replacement gearbox and the work/time involved in replacing it. Thank you for your help

Still not cheap!!!

Out of interest, who diagnosed the problem as being the mechatronic unit? And any info on how this was done eg through the MUT 3?

And were you given, or at least offered the chance to keep, the old unit?

No not cheap at all ): The units are 5K new

An automatic transmission specialist in Northampton diagnosed the fault using a Snap-on Zeus Diagnostic OBD-II Tool amongst other things and experience.

I didn't ask about keeping the old unit in all honesty although I do not see why they wouldn't have given it me if I had indeed asked for it.
