That's why you could make 404 bhp on standard cams - you were inevitably running much more boost than a standard engine can handle.

If you'd fitted aftermarket cams you would have been seeing maybe 15-20 bhp more, with the limit then being the turbo.

So, I guess the complete answer is that you can't make 400 bhp on standard Evo VIII engine with just the 80 series turbo.

You would need to add aftermarket cams, forge it and run big boost, add meth injection or other mods to get to 400 bhp on the standard cams.

Plus what other mods? I guarantee the rest of the engine wasn't standard.

Are you sure it's on the standard cams still then?

Seems odd to me to spend £thousands on forging an engine ready for 500 bhp+, but not spend the three hundred quid to replace the cams that limit the engine to at best 400 bhp at the same time?

Many people do drop in rod and piston jobs due to piston or ringland failure then sort the head out later

True, but in MLR terminology that's called a "rod job", not a forged engine.

Do they? Maybe 10 years ago?

I thought tuning and the limits of the engines were known well enough now that piston or ringland failure are very rare?

A rod job is only changing rods whereas a drop in is forged rods and pistons and is classed as a forged bottom end.

There’s always a chance of engine damage when tuning on the limit and especially on stock engine internals
