Front plate sizing.
Hopefully someone can shed some light or advise.
Seen a fair few members on here with the slightly smaller (kinda bike size ???) front number plate on their evo 4/5s. I know regarding front plates that the "smaller" type is legal as it falls under a dvla regulation with regards to imports and those vehicles that were never sold in the UK/EU markets. Correct me if am wrong. Can any advise a place where they got theirs from or a size which was used if they don't want to tell me as such. Am seeing mixed sizes and not 100% sure what is right wrong or completly illegal (to the point which the excuse from the dvla wouldn't work with the plods ![]() Thanks, Christian. |

On a V you are better off fitting a UK standard plate like the one in the photo beause then you keep the Intercooler clear. It's why they put it to one side on the VI with the JDM size plates.
![]() proplates is a good site to buy a plate from

My understanding is that smaller sized letters/numbers are permissible on certain Japanese imports. But I'm afraid I have no idea where to find chapter and verse on the subject. Someone like Neverneverman would most likely know.

Problem is if you go with something obviously difficult you'll have the plod pull you over eventually, even if it's technically legal.
Best to go with the font, size and spacing that is definitely legal. IIRC you can cut the plate down or run a square one so long as the letter size and spacing is correct. |

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2002/2687/regul... Size and spacing of characters: special cases 14A.—(1) This regulation applies in relation to any vehicle imported into the United Kingdom which— (a)does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval; and (b)is so constructed that the area available for the fixing of the registration plate precludes the display on the plate of a registration mark in conformity with the requirements of regulation 14. On your V5 it will likely mention something about single vehicle approval which means technically all evos are imports. It's still a bit grey reagrding the construction area however you can argue the full size plate blocks the intercooler. For the rear a full size plate is safer. I bought my plates from craigsplates and bought a 5 digit number plate to get it as small as legally possible on the front! I also have the above printed out in the glove box ready for when I get pulled (after havng been done twice previously with a larger but illegal plate!) |

Yes you can have the same size font as bikes on import vehicles
This is the size of font and gaps required and a pic of my old plate which was made as small as poss to be legal ![]()
