No need to take subframe off on e7/8/9, remove the rear section of the transfer box (4 bolts), jack up front of engine, transfer box can then come out the gap.
Easy enough to do on the drive if you lift it high enough on a couple of stands. The subframe does not need to be removed.
Heres a good little how to you may find helpful.
Lol. Sponners .. Have you tried to do that then ? That is possible on the drive way on stands but I've done lots of E456 and E789 and that is the hardest way to do it . If it's on a ramp I would still drop the sub frame .
Done loads of gearboxes and clutches on my back on e7-9 Paul and never once taken the subframe out. Time depends on how pushed for time I am  2h to strip down is possible though. Bit longer to build up and fill all fluids etc though.
I must add though I'm on a 100% flat floor and quite well equipped with good jacks, tools and stands etc. Wouldn't fancy it on the average driveway!
6hrs to change a transfer box:crackup:
A used my cousins ramp an had to cut into chassis to weld the captive nut as it was spinning
Dropped the subframe slightly to get box out.
Only took me 3.5hrs from start to finish an am not a mechanic:smthumbup
