ND Con Rod Feedback Please!

I am looking for feedback from anyone who has had a "rod job" done by us or anyone else please.

I have heard today that "another" person other than Mr Lumley (which was a mailorder "rod job") has allegedly had a pin come out. I want to know about ANY issues that people have had.

Freedom of information to aid the community as a whole. I am not in the practice of keeping anything under wraps.

Cheers

Simon

Mine is going for rods this weekend. Will be using Manleys

Im not sure, this is what im trying to find out. I know Det can cause it with a floating pin and cast piston. We have inspected Mr Lumleys parts and they are within tolerance (although on the high end) so we are unsure why he has had an issue. (We had done loads of rod jobs so far without issue)

However He said someone else has had the issue recently and I would find out soon. I thought it worth trying to make any issues public even if there are no issues with our work.

I have had one fail when we did the work in house, it shot one pin out the side of the piston but I turned it off straight away so the block was saved by a 0.5mm re-bore. That was due to a boost controller issue which kept spiking 3+ bar when mapping.

Cheers

Si

So simon are u saying that det has caused the cilps to come out of the pistons?

And that they are now within tolerance (although at the high end) now that they have had new clips fitted to the pistons or when they had the old clips fitted?

Probably best not to discuss individual cases on here, but in general surely the amount of det needed to push a clip out would have left severe pitting on the crown of the piston at least (not forgetting these are stock non-forged pistons we're talking about)?

No that is not the case, for anyone that knows an Evo engine, they do not (IMO) leave any signs of det on the crown or combustion chamber. A dropped plug after Det can give this impression but is not the case.

Anyway I am not talking about sustained Det I am talking about some heavy Det for a short period of time. I know this as the example I have given was exactly this!

Cheers

On the engine we had issue with, yes. On yours..... as I said on the phone I am not sure, I certainley don't want to point the finger at you as discussed.

Yes this is with new (undamaged/compressed) clips (Spiro locks), as I said the clips on the "other cylinders" were replaced and the tolerance checked. With this the end float was 3.5 and 4 thou (we aim for 2-4 thou). before the clips were changed they were 10 thou. However as also advised we are now going to reduce the tolerance from 2-4 to 2-2.5 thou as an added measure.

Anymore questions Jamie just ask. I will put all the paperwork in the post to you tomorrow though!

Cheers

Si

Can the other alleged failure also come forward please and discuss the surrounding symptoms when the pins came out? If possible I would like to see the pistons and rods to check measurements here.

As an aside to any third parties reading this I have supplied Jamie a 2.3L stroker kit at less than half price as goodwill gesture without predjudice.

Cheers

Simon

I have done around 30 of my own conrod conversions and had only one failure where the pin came out. That engine was the same as yours,Simon,a mailorder job where i just sent the parts and the customer had the parts installed by a "normal" enginebuilder. Running it in my own Evo 9 wagon,no problems since over 20000km,done timeattack, done trackdays,1/4mile.....,works perfect as on all customercars and some of them are trying hard to wreck their engines

Hope that helps a bit,Simon.

Can u please tell me the what is the diffrence between u compressing piston rings and instaling the pistons in the block then torquing the big end caps up to anybody else that builds engines for a living?

If the job was done in situ could it be people 'hitting' the rod too hard when fitting causing stress on the pin which is amplified when run?
