Hi guys,

This symptom started a few weeks ago! Starts fine from cold every time, will restart after being switched off without issue!
But... if I park up and come back to it in about 1/2 hour, really struggling to start it! Had the car 7 years, and never had an issue like this before! Anyone have any ideas?!

Thank you in anticipation!, adam

What model evo is it? Search on here for flashing codes, its easier than it sounds (not evo X)

It does sound like something is breaking down under heatsoak, could be a coilpack, but id have thought that would be at its hottest as soon as the engine is turned off

Looking for stored codes, either flash them or get them read, is by far the easiest first thing to try

Hi Stu,

It's an e8, been de-maffed, gems ecu, etc etc
All the work was done before my ownership!

Will take your advice!

Cheers, adam
Ahhhh, that complicates it, you cant get the codes flashed out. Not sure if the gems can be read by a specialist or not

Cam sensor is a cheap part and easy fit, so maybe worth a punt, but it really is just a guess based on my experience of my 5 and this forum

Bit of a long shot but I had something a little similar that turned out to be faulty air temp sensor and calibration. The faulty air temp sensor when hot was telling the ecu it was really cold (-2C) and would therefore add loads of fuel to try and start and obviously it was completely overfueling and causing the difficulty in starting.

It was worse when left after driving as it seemed to get heat soak from the engine and make the air temp sensor read further from the reall air temp. Have you got the software so you can see what the sensors are reading as this would be easy to check. Luckily I had the software for my ecu to check it and it was quite obvious the air temp sensor was way out after been sat for 30 mins.

I had to change the air temperature sensor a few months ago, as I broke the end off it!
The car started fine while I was waiting for a replacement, so I’ll try disconnecting it, and see if it’s a faulty one of those-at least that’s a very simple check!

So was the new air temp sensor you put on the exact same as the old sensor with the same resistance vs air temp calibration line. As if its different all your air temps with be out as you have to put the calibration of your sensor into the ECU.

I know I had to recalculate the air temp calibration line (voltage vs Air temp) for the new sensor and input it into the ecu. Disconnecting the air temp sensor may work it depends what the ecu is set to do when it receives the voltage of a disconnected sensor. Hopefully Its been set to a roughly normal air temp sensor. Unfortunately for me mine was set to -20C when sensor was disconnected and made matters worse.

Tbh, the new sensor “looked “the same as the old, but couldn’t be sure, as it was part of the modifications made by the p/o...

I didn’t do anything to the ecu after fitting the part-my ignorance tbh!

As said earlier, it did start fine, when not connected at all, so will give that a go, and see if that is the source of my woes then! Thanks for all the input guys, really is much appreciated!
