Quick update:

The person who currently has the car believes the timing was not properly set when the timing belt was replaced in 2016. I had the belt done as a matter of course when the car came in from Japan. The current mechanic reckons the hydraulic tensioner was used to tension rather than manually setting which has lead to the belt skipping (it was loose)

Apparently there is no damage (no contact with the piston and the valve). The hydraulic lifters (tappets) were completely compressed and are being replaced. The current mechanic reckons that the only reason for no damage was due to to the lifters.

The engine has had the timing and balance belts replaced along with the lifters.

Having the transfer and the gearbox checked out too (the original reason for contacting this particular specialist)

Will keep updated

No way, that's a real bummer! Hope it's sorted soon and doesn't hit your pocket too hard
