Ohlins Road and Track mini-review

Hi guys,
Our policy has always been to only sell products that we have tested and used ourselves.

With the Ohlins Track and Road Coilovers we were in a tricky situation and actually ended up selling them before testing, which I was not happy about. I was confident enough in the brand and reputation that it wasn't a big problem, but needed sorting.

So step forward to tonight...
Our Evo IV was driven around a regular route at sensible speeds (hahem! ) and a lot of attention was paid to ride quality, body roll, braking dive, weight shift on acceleration, etc. Of course, I also tried to push the car through some corners that I know well to establish a base line on speed and confidence given to me by the kit on the car.

I then pulled into the workshop and set about taking some measurements to ensure we could replicate the ride height etc in order to make it a fair test.
Then the "old" kit was removed. We were totally happy with the kit removed. It was a sub-£1000 "budget" kit, but was one of the best we had tried in the last couple of years.

The Ohlins kit was fitted with the Ohlins recommended settings, with the exception of ride height which was fractionally lower at the front by 5mm compared to the recommended numbers.
FYI: Ohlins settings -
Spring Preload - 2mm front and rear
Damping - Maximum less 10 clicks
A quick geometry check was done and then it was out for a test drive...
Total time between driving and being out driving again - 2 hours (Thanks John and Mitch for your time )

The same route was driven and thought given to the same criteria.
I can safely say I was totally gobsmacked. These things live up to the hype and some!

First thing to note is ride quality. Potholes in the road, drain covers, catseyes etc - not really felt at all. Large dips in the road can be hit and fairly high speed without being thrown off line. Comfort wise the car is now BETTER than my E90 BMW 3 series!

Next, braking. On braking with the previous kit the car had a tendency to dive, squirm a bit and tramline. No such issues with the Ohlins. It's obvious the damping is MUCH more controlled.

On and off the power it's hard to tell the difference between the Ohlins and previous kit, but the Ohlins does have a little less body movement.

Now it was into a series of corners that I know VERY WELL. I entered at the same speed I did prevouisly and the difference was quite frankly ridiculous. Body roll was markedly reduced. Grip level was crazy.
To be fair, I was shocked. I turned around and went through again, this time pushing harder to try and find the limit. My kahunas gave up before the grip ran out. So that's that test well and truly passed!

After extending the "test drive" by about 30 minutes I went home...
Overall it's safe to say that my confidence in the product was justified. The car has been totally transformed! From something that was quick and handled well, into something that is so confidence inspiring it's crazy.

I'm a big sceptic when it comes to high value upgrades and deep down I thought it would be hard to tell the difference between a budget set up and a set of Ohlins. Couldn't have been more wrong!
Hand on heart, I would - and in fact have - spend my own hard earned on this upgrade. Worth every penny.

The 3 most successful upgrades to our EVO have been:
PF 2 piece discs
Ohlins Road and Track suspension
Link G4 ECU

The car is now where I want it to be in order to drop in the 2.4L engine and explore the high power level safely and with confidence.

You may notice that we have an EVO 4, and that Ohlins do not make a kit for the 4/5/6. We have developed a small conversion kit for fitting Ohlins from an EVO 7/8/9 to the EVO 4/5/6.
This is not endorsed by Ohlins, but we can offer a package to allow the 7/8/9 suspension to be fitted to a 4/5/6 if you choose to do so.

Pics to follow later in week.
Just waiting on the "final" version of the bracket to hold the ABS and brake lines to the coilover as it's not pretty at the moment

Execellent Review

I've been waiting for someone to do a more indepth review on the Ohlins R&T kit. I'm really debating about bashing the credit card for a set of these, allthough I'll probably still need to go out for a passanger ride in a car with them fitted before I do. Don't want to make the same mistake I did with the billies.

I believe Grant now not only has the adapters to reduce hub bolt diameter to the suitable size and the spacers to allow the 789 bottom mount to mate to the 456 hubs but he is now able to supply 456 camber top plates should they be required.
