Monogramming

My dad is big into cuff links and when I bought him a swanky cuff link box from some wanky shop on Oxford Street that barely agreed to let me in the door, they offered a monogramming option. I declined because of the time it would take, but also I don't know if my dad would be into that, it seemed a bit juvenile to me like yir maw sewing name labels into your underwear.

I was about to buy a wallet online and they also offer a monogramming service, and Touker Suleyman always wears monogrammed shirts, so there is obviously something in this. I did a google search; "is monogramming" and it auto-completed "is monogramming tacky". There is a lot written on the subject and Esquire opines that if it is subtle and discreet it is a good thing, and this wallet vendor does indeed offer a subtle and discreet option.

I can't stop thinking about my mum sewing name labels on my underwear though.

Is it tacky to have something like a wallet discretely monogrammed?

I would have said your name on the sunstrip on a Capri in the 70’s was tacky but as you pointed out if it is on personal possessions and discreet I think it’s good, even more so if it’s a gift as it shows thought has gone into it. Anybody can just go and buy a wallet but to make it personal shows you have gone the extra step.

The wallet is for me, so we need to consider the narcissism too

Should be no problem, I'd have thought.

It’s a very Italian thing to do if it makes you feel better (or worse)

I like the wallet idea, but I’ve friends who have their shirts done etc , and personally it’s all a bit instagram for me. Each to their own though.
