Clutch is often the cause. Some twin plates do this all the time but otherwise could be broken/loose springs or as you say the release bearing.

Looks like 8 and 22 swap is correct however the control signals from the A/C dash switch and Heater-A/C ECU module are also different so maybe that's not compatible? Some different magic going on...

In my case I think the seal was forced in off-centre and damaged, the pressure took care of the rest. There was a little fuel getting through but not enough pressure to get through the injectors.

Have you checked the rubber seal between the pump and the housing? I had this a few years ago and the seal had split so fuel was just pumping back into the tank.

ps mine failed soon after a pump...
