I am looking for feedback from anyone who has had a "rod job" done by us or anyone else please.
I have heard today that "another" person other than Mr Lumley (which was a mailorder "rod job") has allegedly had a pin come out. I want to know about ANY issues that people have had.
Freedom of information to aid the community as a whole. I am not in the practice of keeping anything under wraps.
Im not sure, this is what im trying to find out. I know Det can cause it with a floating pin and cast piston. We have inspected Mr Lumleys parts and they are within tolerance (although on the high end) so we are unsure why he has had an issue. (We had done loads of rod jobs so far without issue)
However He said someone else has had the issue recently and I would find out soon. I thought it worth trying to make any issues public even if there are no issues with our work.
I have had one fail when we did the work in house, it shot one pin out the side of the piston but I turned it off straight away so the block was saved by a 0.5mm re-bore. That was due to a boost controller issue which kept spiking 3+ bar when mapping.
Probably best not to discuss individual cases on here, but in general surely the amount of det needed to push a clip out would have left severe pitting on the crown of the piston at least (not forgetting these are stock non-forged pistons we're talking about)?
No that is not the case, for anyone that knows an Evo engine, they do not (IMO) leave any signs of det on the crown or combustion chamber. A dropped plug after Det can give this impression but is not the case.
Anyway I am not talking about sustained Det I am talking about some heavy Det for a short period of time. I know this as the example I have given was exactly this!
Can the other alleged failure also come forward please and discuss the surrounding symptoms when the pins came out? If possible I would like to see the pistons and rods to check measurements here.
As an aside to any third parties reading this I have supplied Jamie a 2.3L stroker kit at less than half price as goodwill gesture without predjudice.
I have done around 30 of my own conrod conversions and had only one failure where the pin came out. That engine was the same as yours,Simon,a mailorder job where i just sent the parts and the customer had the parts installed by a "normal" enginebuilder. Running it in my own Evo 9 wagon,no problems since over 20000km,done timeattack, done trackdays,1/4mile.....,works perfect as on all customercars and some of them are trying hard to wreck their engines
Can u please tell me the what is the diffrence between u compressing piston rings and instaling the pistons in the block then torquing the big end caps up to anybody else that builds engines for a living?
Work done by nr, 2 bar of boost,
10,000 miles,
I have done lots of sprints/dragging,
The car has been used very hard,,:smthumbup
Its been spot on,
500bhp :smthumbup
if i was you simon i would stop doing the mail order option, that way if anything goes wrong then you know it's down to you. if someone else fits them and there is a problem then i can guarantee you will be the first person they blame, not worth the hassle.
sent rods and pistons to ND, they changed the rods and sent them back.
Willox built the car back up and its running 2.2 bar with no problems, done 4>5k miles. when you see the standard rods next to the upgraded ones i,m glad there changed for peace of mind.
top service from ND:smthumbup
That's the first time I've seen std rods pictured with the ND rods. Can't believe the difference
Despite what has or hasn't happened, Simon is doing the right thing and dealing with the situation in a professional manner, with what appears to be mutual agreement on a stroker kit. Bit of hassle I agree, but when you start doing anything thats away from the standard build of these cars, you need to appreciate, things could go wrong even if it's just an oil leak after having a sealed motor apart.....
I question what would happen if I took a set of pistons to my local engineering shop and asked them to machine the pistons, and later something went wrong......
To be honest, if I was a machinist and asked to machine a groove in the pistons that didn't have a groove, I would do exactly what the customer asked for, but I would give him no guarantee, and that would be just to cover myself, should something let go.
Just as a matter of interest, what was the symptoms of something not being as it should be internally? Was it a case of being down on power, engine started smoking.... just for others to be aware.
Personnaly if I was Simon, I wouldn't do the mail order rods anymore. Not saying that anyone has done anything wrong in rebuilding an engine, but it's one less link in the chain so to speak....
I am exactly the same as W17NNY -
Sent rods and pistons to ND, they supplied forged rods and machined the pistons to accept the new rods and assembled them for Willox to build the engine.
Car has been spot on for over 5k miles. :smthumbup
Sorry to get off topic, but I think somebody should mention that the mail order option is the only option for some people, as they cannot afford to travel to the UK with their, leave the car with ND for 3 or however many days, stay in a B&B, take time off work and then travel home. The mail order "rod job" is a much more feasible option. If the rods and pistons are fitted by somebody compitent they will obviously check that there are no issues with the floating pins or damage and check all tolerances prior to fitting and the responsibility would then most likely rest on the person that fitted them in my opinion as they deemed them to be satisfactory prior to fitting.
It seems to be only a minority of failures out of the many people that seem to have had this conversion done so it should not put people off getting this conversion done.
As I said in the first line sorry for straying off topic.
Valid point about the mail order IMO, Johnny G, but I guess it's up to the tuners to decide whether they're willing to take the risk of someone else installing "their" parts.
Hopefully they will, as it seems a lot of people have been happy with this solution to the age-old 400bhp + connundrum.
I had the rod deal/gasket/studs/gs1 fitted and i noticed the car sounded slightly rougher (probably Cams) at 20,000 and have covered 6k and many track days, although i haven't got the green or raised the boost yet. But the ingredients are there and i can't wait for 2 bar :mhihi:
i've had this done by simon, can't fault it at all, dropped the car off on 1 day, 2 days later i collected it all done! i RAG the nuts off of my car whenever i drive the car and have had no issues.
im thinking of dropping my car to norris aswell after seing the job he did on Si`s 1000bhp evo in ireland is just unreal.
i was tempted by the rod conversion job and was thinking of getting the job done myself, but i think i would feel safer if Simon did the job instead:coolsm:
Mine has been done for over 2 yrs now,,19,000 miles
gt3076r at 2.2 bar, No probs at all,,
Fantastic mod
