Every few weeks my daily driven stock 2006 Evo ix fails to start, normally after 4 or 5 days of not being driven but can also fail immediately after driving.
The ignition turns on normally then when I turn the key to start position everything blacks out, including power to interior lights and door locks.
The car powers up and starts normally again after disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds.
Any suggestions appreciated
Aren't what you describe the classic symptoms of a failing battery cell or cells ie one minute you get full voltage and next minute it can drop to around 10 volts. Have you actually tried measuring the output voltage?
thanks Phil, yes I have checked the voltage output from the alternator and battery and both are normal. I also cleaned the terminals and replaced the battery but neither solved the problem. It seems like the disconnecting an reconnecting the battery resets something, perhaps a faulty relay ?
yes even with the new battery installed or with jumper leads connected the dash instruments will not light up until I disconnect and reconnect the battery.
From my experience sounds like failing either ignition switch or wire connecting switch to starter. Very common in Mitsubishi Galant from mid 90s to mid 00s. Check switch for burned out pins or gunk residue. If OK, check if you have voltage at starter end after turning key into start position.
Very annoying and common problem haunting old Colts, Mirage and Galant
thanks I will pull out the ignition switch and inspect it tomorrow. The starter relay doesn't even click it, it is as if the batter isn't even connected even though the terminals are clean and secure.
yes the starter connections look secure.
it is not just power to the starter that drops. it everything including the doors locks. It will unlock when I come out to the car then will all loose power when i get in and turn the key. could be an immobiliser fault.
When you turn the key to crank it disconnects the power to the "key on" circuits and that is normal. You need to check the battery voltage to see if that drops, if so then it could just be a battery fault. Try switching on the headlights, if they dim significantly when trying to start then again it suggests a battery issue.
Hi thanks again for the tips and sorry on the slow response. The issue hasn't occurred again since August. But the battery voltage doesn't drop on starting.
The only other item that seems unusual is the backlighting on the instrument cluster seems to be on when ever the car is non regardless of if the headlights are on or not. Is that normal ?
