There was some Internet outage this afternoon at the London Internet core that would of effected some people depending on the route coming into the site. I saw the problem occur and it looked like there were some serious issues as the routing updated itself. Outside of our control I'm afraid :(.

The server hasn't actually been down since it went live last year, but it's the connection into the server where you're most likely to have any problems if at all and that could happen anywhere from your PC all the way into the server.

The site will sometimes get slower late at night as the disk system in the server struggles with any big database queries and backups that get run then. Plenty of processing power, for now, but the disks are only IDE. You'll never guess how many hits the MLR site had last month. Don't know whether to laugh or cry

Ian, to save me replying to your mail. Could well of been the problem this afternoon. Was only effecting some people depending on your ISP. If not, perhaps worked have blocked the site? Let me know if you still have problems tomorrow.
Cheers Dave,

I hope no one has blocked my access, I'm the Boss!:D

Actually,,,,,,,,,,, I bet they have.

this MONTH? no way mate. are you counting distinct html page loads or are you just counting the number of all file requests?
i.e. no smilies and stuff...I mean every time I hit "post reply" I get dozens of smilies..you're not counting those, surely?

Posix,

The last 30 days. But I'm counting successful HTTP requests or hits, not page requests. I'm always more interested in requests because that's what makes up the bandwidth we use, 220gb last month, and you can use that as a more accurate, comparative measure of activity. Most images will be cached locally by your browser or by your ISP and not downloaded from this site on every page.

Page requests are around 4 million for the same period which is a better measure of user activity, but you can't measure that accurately easily because of the way the site is structured. A lot of binary data is served through PHP file types. Could get a better picture with some configuration of a reporting tool, but would still be open to interpretation.

TBH web stats from most sites are a load of b******s, so I stick with the basics. There's so many issues that can throw the reporting.

It will almost certainly be a problem on your work PC, network or Internet gateway or possibly your ISP, such as a proxy or DNS problem if it's not been blocked. I'd normally try something like a tracert to begin with when I cant get to a site, but this may well be blocked on your network. It's difficult to suggest what to try without knowing your network. I'd ask whoever is looking after your network to investigate why you cannot access the site. They will have the right permissions to find the problem and should only take a few minutes. That's assuming they havent blocked it because they saw the web access logs full of www.lancerregister.com and didn't know who was using it :D.

slowing down again...

daveg: 4 million is still high.. but doable, I guess..
and yes, get requests are fine for bandwidth and cost calculations but not for user activity (remember smilies and menus etc...I can count 32 smilies on just this form, so that would multiply your page impressions by 32)
anyway enough of that.

There's hardly any load on the server right now, current load average is 0.19. What ISP are you with? I get loads of complaints from NTL customers :(.

Nearly all smilies, the javascript in the menu's and other stuff will be cached locally and only represent a minor amount of requests from the server. In fact getting the javascript to refresh is a major PITA. PHP file types are the most popular with gifs and jpegs much less so. It's the ads and images on events pages and in the forum that count for a large percentage of the extra requests a page request generates.

It's also surprising the amount of requests you see from spiders, bots and script kiddies.

Aidy, very true if you are building a picture of user activity, which I am not, but this where you get into the murky world of web stats if you do want to build that picture. As I'm sure you know, web log reporting can be very misleading for determining sessions and visits. Application level reporting would be much better and the side does operate session id's which if logged would give a clear picture of activity and visits with the right reporting.

As it stands I only really monitor bandwidth and because I can only see web logs to calculate bandwidth I also look at the requests that make that up. There is some MRTG reporting for the site with would be easier, but it's only available to the ISP.

Fair doos, if you just want to know about bandwith for financial reasons then fair enough. As for visit logging I always register first visits as that is all I am tend to be interested in, and also how many times each feature is accessed to give an idea about what on the site is popular and what isn't.
