Which would be the best turbo on a ix rod jobbed engine out of the 2 mentioned above ? Fast road car, wanting quick spool and up to 450 - 460 bhp. I know the HKS is a BB turbo, however the 71 is available in journal or BB. If I went for the 71 would I notice much difference between journal and BB ? Will be running Kelford 264, 1000cc injectors, uprated IC, full turbo back 3inch. Also would the additional cost of say a Link G4 be worth it at this level ?

Go for the HKS, apparently has the best spool available...though the GTII has some surge issues, but there is the GTIII version now available which may hopefully overcome this known shortcoming...

I run 470bhp on my rod jobbed IX but I'm still on OEM ECU, but I have converted to SD, with no issues, so I'd say you don't need to go with the Link unless it has some features you specifically need from it...

I currently run SD and no particular feature for me needing an aftermarket ecu just wondered really. If I can save 1k plus without buying one and it be no detriment to the car then I won’t bother. Yeah the HKS does sound good what I have read just a bit on the pricey side at 2.5k. Hence asking about the 71 but to spec that to BB your up at 2k +. Decisions decisions !!!!!

difference between HTA 71 and HKS will be a bit in spool but HKS will always have a signifficantly better transient..... Stock 80 series will have a slight delay when you get on the throttle... I have measured the HKS for transient response and at 4000 RPM it will go from full vacuum in intake to 1.8 bar boost in something like half a second... it is a mad turbo.

I think the main problem with hks is that people try to make it a 500 hp turbo.. and overspeed it. Keep it under 2 bar, and make sure you have enough preload on the wastegate. Some have had problems with the flapper but I suspect it is from too little preload. Also, one thing I do not like about it is the adjustment screw on the WG rod which is a bit flimsy and thin, likes to bend..

as you are running SD you will have no issues with the turbo.. it likes to surge on small throttle which is a bit of a problem with maf.. with cams especially.. I installed it on a friends E9 wit s2 cams, 1000 cc asnus, uprated IC, and most of the comments I get is that the car is a bit "wild"... as in really sharp throttle response.. IMHO, untill I try my efr kit this is my favourite road turbo..

I highly recommend HKS 7460, had 2 on both my Evos, only moved on in a natural process of increased greed for speed.

But the experience with HKS superb performance meant I was lured by another highly responsive line of turbos, EFR by Borg Warner.

I miss HKS frankly, its the simplicity in stock appearance and all OEM fit, and performance with no downsides.

I’m using a 7460 with a turbo smart actuator on a 2.3 with Kelford 272 cams and a Link G4. Spool is unreal but it is totally maxed out flow wise on my engine. Running it at 25psi but using stock intake and manifolds to make it appear stock. It’s a bloody fast road car but does fall off quickly up top.
It makes 325kw at the wheels and 770nm @ 3500rpm.

I run the 2.0ltr long rod with the HKS7460 and the HKS cams on a pace intercooler on a LinkG4+ and it it very good and B road beast, spool is very fast and run it on race fuel as well and has about 40 hp more but bloody expensive. It sounds so nice and flutters and very crisp fueling set up by Antony from Indigo-gt. Synapse BOV and can be set for very fast response and chips and chatters which sounds great.

Although not a blot-on turbo but many have installed the Garrett G25-550 on Evos via v-band exhaust manifolds. The G25-550 should easily achieve more HP than the HKS7460 but I wonder how it fairs against it in terms of spool?
HKS7460:
Compressor Wheel Specs:
49 trim
52mm Inducer
74mm Exducer
.82 A/R
Turbine Wheel Specs:
60mm Inducer

81 trim
.74 A/R

G25-550:
Compressor Wheel Specs:
54 trim
48mm Inducer
60mm Exducer
.70 A/R
Turbine Wheel Specs:

Single Scroll on road-Evo makes little sense.
Twin Scroll spools so much quicker, and tends to make virtually same power on top, give-or-take minimal difference -depends on specific turbo.

FYI friend just updated his 2.3 EFR8374 from GSC S3 to S2 cams,
On E85 - which may or may not affect spool at all
8374 explodes at 3400rpm-3500rpm in 3rd gear

When I say explodes, I mean -halls ass to 8500rpm like a bat out of hell.
It's setup to peek at 28-29psi and bleed to the top some.

In 4th gear it comes on strong by 3200rpm. I am amazed at the spool. Power was never in question.

So if going "Big or go home", full frame, consider EFR7670 for the road. Because although its a 2.3 stroker and feels much stronger on bottom end than 2.0--> like 20% more torque is really felt at off idle to 2500rpm...
With Big 8374 there is a relative -silence from 2500 to 3000rpm, compared to stock turbo that is fully lit by 2500-3000rpm, and that silence is ok, but not ideal.

So, 7670 I think would fill this 2500-3000rpm gap superbly.

When you consider all else, HKS 7460 is simple bolt on solution that is unrivaled in performance in its class.
Stock ECU, SD, no worries.
