ICE - What head unit?

Hi,

I have been trying to decide on what head unit to buy and I canít make up my mind! I want something a bit flash but donít really want to pay more than £500.

I like the idea behind Densionís DH-101 (http://www.dension.com/index.dw?oldal=2&nyelv_id=2) but i dont like the look of the unit.

Sony has some nice units out, the CDXM850MP (http://products.sony.co.uk/productdetail.asp?id=3_34_2467#) looks ok?

Can someone post me a link to a Ďgoodí head unit?

Cheers, Matt

The best unit I've found that will blend in nicely with your interior is a clarion 838. Big display, changeable colours, remote, detachable aluminium face, actually the list is so long I'll let you read up on it here (http://www.clarion.com). It does mp3 and wma too if you're into that.
And the sound, well with factory fitted 6-speaker option (kenwood I think) I don't need a sub with this - it's that good!

Gotta agree with Spank. My mate had an Alpine set up in his Citruin, until some scumbag broke in & stole it

I'm not a fan of ICE at all. But he did have a really good system.

If your looking for quality sound without all the flashy graphic lights etc etc then check out what the sound off guys are using.

Pick up a copy of Car Audio (not sure if its called that these days) and see what they recommend. There should be write ups in the mags for units under test. You should be able to see what is the best bit of kit you can get for your money.

Dont automatically go for the best looking one as that means didly squat when it comes to actual sound!

If it's normal size aperture then you cannot beat the Sony CDXM1000TF for the money or MEX5Di if you can afford it. Great quality and superb graphics.

The MEX5Di has a silver casing though and silver in a black dash looks ****E !!!

http://products.sony.co.uk/productdetail.asp?id=3_34_2469# click on 'new technology' in the right hand menu and then 'TFT' in the new screen menu

...thus clarion :D What do you really think how much time I've spent looking at these things? I have been looking at this issue for the past 2-3 months now and the closest I could come to my trim (together with features I expected, plus lots of unexpected ones) were pioneer old-skool one, panasonic 2038 (no buttons at all so you can match the graphics colours with your dash) and the clarion with it's dark grey brushed metal face. The guy who installed my sigma had it in stock for less than 300 squid and I had him install it there and then. First chop off the mitsubishi plug, put on an iso plug (for future-proofing) and then iso to clarion converter. The only grief I have with after-market equipment is that it sticks out soooo blooody far out above the dash faceplate. I'll have to recess it a bit further into the dash and make up a new bezel for it so it sits nice and as flush as possible.

....er...no :D the CDMX1000TF has a black casing, if you wanted to you could have a good radio installer buy in a black fascia from the CDMX1000TF as spares and fit it to the MEX5Di for the best of both worlds. The CDMX1000TF is good enough though and of course comes in black as standard, depends how much of a gadget freek you are.

Serious audiophiles wouldn't really consider Clarion and Pioneer is far too mainstream (snob snob :D )

JVC 9101 !! Simply VERY effective!

I've built 3 pro audio cars this season all of which have won sereval IASCA(internatiional auto sound challenge association) competitions this season ..... 13 first places can't be bad - common factor JVC 9101!

If you're at TRAX I'll be at the IASCA stand with a silver TME ...

Serious audiophiles wouldn't consider clarion and pioneer is far too mainstream? And all that coming from someone advocating use of sony kit? Ummm....ermmmm....serious audiophiles would switch their car radios off and slightly open the front and rear windows and listen to the lower octaves coming from the back box and high-pitch white coming from the compressor while enjoying the full 3d sound stage unravelling infront of them on both sides of their favourite stretch of finest A and B ;)
Or they would fit a pair of premier 8s in the boot (somehow) and a pair of accuton tweeters in a-pillars together with some bass units in the doors....or sumfink! Or maybe some lowthers housed into the air vent openings....Aight!?

My clarion is better than your sony! :D :moon:
