FTO tip gear boxes can be a bit twitchy, and getting them repaired can be a bit of a black art- an expensive one at that.
First of all check that the passenger footwell is totally dry. The Gearbox ecu is located directly below the heater matrix. Heater matrix leaks, drips on TCU, shorts it out, you get all sorts of wierd and wonderful gearbox behaviour. The TCU itself is pretty tough and even if leaked on it will normally be okay if it is dried out carefully.
If the footwell is dry, then go for input and output speed sensors. They are about £50 each from Camskill. Depending on the exact model there is a small variation in the price. Takes an hour max to change the pair.
If that doesnt work, then normally it is a 'gearbox cooked' job. Never found anyone decent to recon them for less than £1800. New they are about £5k.
2nd hand can be got for between £300 and 450. If its a 5 spd, expect to pay more (Ie more like £550-600 since they are rare). Swap is about £250.
By the look of your location you are in the North West. Best bet would probably be colin at CMS in birmingham.
Ive had a problem with my fto literally a few weeks ago.. my advice would be to buy a 2nd hand gearbox.. cost me £150 and it solved the problem. Make sure its complete with a torque converter though.
Thanks for the responses fellas appreciate it:smthumbup
We are going for the input sensor first and see what happens from there, already ordered from camskill, Thanks.
I'll pass on the CMS note to him.
Thanks again lads
