My Norris Designs E8 MR build thread

Have always loved reading build threads and thought it was time to do one on my Evo 8 MR FQ-340. Like the idea of cataloguing the mods and changes as you go along and it’s always great if you ever want to sell the car.

I bought it at stage 1 mods with the idea of driving it for 6 months to a year then selling on for another TVR. I picked it up from Blackburn, drove it home up through the lakes and that was that!! – I was immediately in love with it and I’ve never thought about another car since. This is the one and only Evo I’ll ever own. You might read this thinking why is it a build thread done in reverse as I’ve done so much to it already, but there’s a lot more to come!

Thanks to Simon Norris and his team for building/putting together the engine and turbo package. The engine is awesome and is just so smooth at any revs with great response from a 2.0L @ 600+ bhp. Thanks to Clive W for building my entire drivetrain, the gearbox is sublime! Thanks to John Swift @ Extreme Motorsport for looking after me and my car, I wouldn’t ever take it anywhere else!

Spec when I got it.

Std MR extra’s, RS rear diff, ATS twin plate clutch, MR Bilsteins lowered on Tein springs, Yoko AD08’s, std Brembo’s, Cusco 3 point strut brace front and rear, blitz SS air filter, 8MR 10.5 turbo running at 1.85 Bar with printouts of 405bhp / 390ft/lbs.

Pictures of the car the day I got it.

With an average of 5k a year and most of the receipts being from southern England, the car was in very good condition underneath. You could tell it had been well looked after. I quickly became bored of the stage 1 power as it was just so useable most of the time! I thought long and hard about which way to go with it and what tuner/engine builder to use. I made the decision to invest big in the car and to promise myself to keep it for a minimum of 5 years. With the car having been well looked after and every single receipt kept/documented, I was keen to continue this. After speaking with numerous Evo tuners/specialists within reach of me John Swift was the nicest over the phone and the most willing to speak to me about the car and explain things etc…. My first service with John I added a few nice bits.
Whiteline rear anti roll bar, whiteline roll centre kit, ETS intercooler, ralliart front suspension bushes and I went for a full fluid service too for good measure. Have been impressed with John ever since! He tells it how it is and really knows his stuff! John gave me a fast road setup and with the upgrades it really made a marked difference with the car handling very nicely and balanced with great turn in.

Next up was a 6 week holiday for the car at Norris Designs. Below is the spec of the build

- 800+bhp Norris Designs fully built forged 2.0L dynamically balanced by ‘Oselli Motorsport Engineering’. Brand new block, machined improved oil ways, oil pump, oil squirters, liners etc used for the build.
- 85.5mm JE Asymmetric forged pistons.
- Manley 'turbo-tuff' I-Beam rods 1000Hp + rated.
- ND 3mm lash adjusters.
- Precision Turbo 5558 V-band, 4inch inlet, 0.82 a/r housing, dual ceramic ball bearing core. Water feed removed.
- ND 1000bhp rated v-band manifold with billet collector and V-band elbow - heat wrapped with titanium infused wrap.
- RC 1000cc injectors.
- 400L/hr Walbro hard wired fuel pump.
- ND Kelford 272 cams.
- ND Uprated valve springs and Ti retainers.
- Blitz NUR Spec R 3 inch exhaust, custom V-band 3 inch downpipe, 3 inch decat.
- Exedy twin plate HD clutch.
- HKS adjustable cam pulleys.
- New Cambelt.
- ND Cosworth style head gasket.
- ETS 3 inch intercooler rated to 800+bhp
- ND 24 row oil cooler with new braided oil lines.
- ND stage 2 head, polished & ported, +1mm inlet/exhaust valves. Rated to 900 bhp.
- Slimline rad fan to allow for bigger turbo.
- All New OE Mitsi engine bearings.
- ND engraved H11 head bolts.
- ND short balance shaft removal kit.
- New 88mm OE Mitsi balanced crank.
- Link G4+ ECU with Anti Lag and Launch Control. Knock and lambda control.
- Low/high boost switch 1.6/2.1 bar. Rev limit set @ 8250rpm.
- 5spd gsr gearbox.

These are some of the pictures from the build. I was Impressed with Norris Design’s work and their professionalism. Also Simon waiting until 8pm on a Friday for me to collect the car, on his wedding anniversary too!! The power / torque figure surprised us both making 605bhp and 520ft/lbs @ 2.1 bar. I was worried about the response with that much power from a 2.0L, but I need not have worried as the response was awesome, considering. 4th gear pull from low revs yielded over 1bar at 3500rpm giving great power from mid 3k rpms. Full boost coming in at around 4200rpm and the engine revving to 8250rpm still gave a very good power band.

Having the RS rear diff when I got the car was a great benefit and one less thing to worry about, but the drivetrain was always a cause for concern for me. The next set of mods were my gearbox, transfer box and RS rear diff being sent down to Clive for the full works. Thanks for scaring the crap out of me in your BMW Clive!

Gearbox box converted to an RS 5 speed (RS 3rd,4th,5th input and output) with 4.11 final drive – entire gear set and centre diff superfinished,3rd and 4th pairs dual stage shot peened, new input shaft, Clive’s 5th gear mod, uprated bearings with custom pre-load, 1000bhp centre diff output shaft, casing soda blasted, high tolerance shifter and selector bushes, machined casing for improved oil flow.

Transfer box was upgraded to equivalent 'Shep Trans' stage 3, M10 bolt upgrade, Wavetrac LSD installed, brand new crown wheel and pinion (cryo-treated, dual stage shot peened and superfinished) and uprated high load bearings, all bolts wire locked, all friction plates inspected and measured.

RS diff was stripped and inspected, crown wheel and pinion superfinished and dual stage shot peened, uprated high load input bearing installed, additional friction plates added to the LSD for additional lock-up/traction.

Some of the photo’s.

Some more pics. Absolutely love the car and each time I drive it it is just such an adrenalin rush! Next came Ohlins with a more aggressive geo from John and it just keeps getting better and better, the cars feels like it can handle a lot more power.

The car is in the bodyshop at the moment for a front end respray with some carbon air ducts being fitted

Then its back at Norris Designs for the following to be added, hoping to be finished for Japfest.

Magnus V5 inlet manifold
S90 billet 74mm throttle body
Precision Turbo 5858 ceramic ball bearing turbo with 0.82 A/R housing.
Norris Design’s CDI ignition kit
Evo 6 Mishimoto alloy radiator
Knock and closed loop lambda control sensors installed and added to ECU

Will post the results up with the new setup! Be interesting to see what the Precision 5858 will do with the Magnus V5. Hoping it's not too laggy and feel this should be the most I should take the 2.0L to for a road car. Love how the car looks relatively standard from the outside. Have surprised a lot of things on the road I tell you, haha!
