CBRD BBK turbo results
CBRD BBK turbo results:
358lbft and 438hp. = +5lbft, +48hp over my 8MR turbo 415lbft and 463hp at 30psi peak down to 27psi. = +12lbft, + 50hp. My car is an Evo 8 260 with standard rods/pistons and ECU. Mods are: 255 fuel pump RC750 injectors BBK full turbo 3" Modular downpipe Sports cat 3" cat back exhaust APS dump valve NGK BR8ES plugs AEM intake HKS 272 cams APS intercooler AMS lower intercooler pipe AEM water/meth injection Firstly I'd like to say this turbo only takes 200 to 300rpm longer to spool up than my previous 8MR spec turbo. There is no surge in any gear and only a very slight surge at part throttle in 5th (less than the stock turbo). Also my car has never produced big torque on the dyno, always a bit less than expected. I tuned the car on the road with Ecuflash and reckoned it made 380lbft and 455hp at 24 to 25psi of boost to redline with no more than 3 counts of knock. This was done in the cooler weather a few weeks ago but I noticed over the last few days knock counts had increased slightly. On the first dyno run I was surprised that the car made exactly what was predicted even though there was a knock count of 7 at 6000rpm. On the second run there was more knock all over the power band and power and torque dropped. The car proved it could make great power on a single run but as I'm running a stock block I'd rather it mapped with some safety in mind so some timing was pulled to eliminate knock over 3 counts. Also, I never mapped the car on the road with 4 passengers while going up hill so I'm happy with a conservative 358lbft and 438hp. We then flicked the magic switch that turns on the water/meth injection and changes maps in the ECU. I hadn't fully tuned this setting on the road but the knock warning light seldom came on. On the first dyno run there was a fair bit of knock so we took some timing out and power went up. The result was 415lbft and 463hp. I think I'll fine tune this on the road as I only turn on the water/meth on a straight road with no more than one passenger in the car. A tank full of water/meth doesn't last very long so I'm limited to how long I can use it. I think there is a little more power to be had here. Conclusion - This is a great street turbo, pretty much the same spool as stock with a very wide power band. It's not a big HP turbo like the S205 or FP Red but then again you gain more low down the RPM range than these bigger turbos can offer. The only downside is the price and whether you feel the turbo is a significant enough improvement over the standard 9 unit for the money. Contact Gav@co-ordsport if you are interested in a BBK turbo. On the graphs below I've noticed the dyno's boost reading is a couple PSI higher than what my AVCR and Evoscan are saying. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by John F; 09-08-2009 at 11:25.. |

Nice results John, and given it's a Dastek dyno I bet the torque is Nice
![]() Are you running 50/50 water meths by the way? |

Good results and the power I was expecting, just seen it was the full.
thanks for sharing the results.

Nice spread of torque and power there

I should have mentioned that the turbo is a BBK Full with no porting work done. The water/meth mix is indeed 50/50.

Nice results John. I'll be chuffed if mine makes similar figures.

Nice results John have you tried it on neat meths to see what the power difference is like between neat and a 50/50 mix

Nice, it is hard to get >400 lbft on Dastek!

No, never tried that. I was thinking of adding a second nozzle with maybe a 30/70 water/meth mix.

I ran neat meths but i was reading that a 50/50 mix produces virtually the same power but with better cylinder cooling |

Thats a wide and flat torque delivery. Must feel very nice. I have been reading about pre turbo W/I, any one here any experiance with that?

i've quickly just read that.
can you explain the boost etc for the first figures? i notice you have tuned via evoscan/flash iirc matt monitors knock thru cans and can have constant evoscan knocksums of 15 without being near any audile or knock for concern so maybe yours has this margin to go! ? |

The tune on pump fuel reads 24 to 25psi on my AVCR on the road and dyno. I don't know why the dyno graph is showing higher boost.
I've heard knock in the cabin before with a knock count of 9. I think 15 would be very audible with det cans. The knock sensor can be desensitised in Ecuflash but I'm not about to mess with that, especially running stock bottom end. I've spoken to Scheides on EvoM about my results. He has a similar set up but with ported manifolds, head and Kelford cams. We make about the same power at 24psi but he makes 20hp more than me at high boost. Check out the graphs below. They are from Evoscan road logs at 24to25psi boost. This is where Virtual Dyno Room comes in very useful. I think it is a far better tool than comparing results from various real dynos. Scheides also pointed out that I'm using a sports cat which might loose me 10hp. My results at 24-25psi ![]() Scheides results at 24-25psi ![]() |
