Thumbs up MLR Attends UK's Official Evo X Launch

The UK’s official Evo X launch was kicked off at Prodrive Live in Warwickshire with the first two days of the intensive three week programme being dedicated to the UK Press, and the MLR was lucky enough to be on the guest list.

Myself and Mick429 as MLR snapper attended earlier today and were two of a group of 30 guests. On arrival at Prodrive we registered at Reception alongside a Frost White Evo X SST and received a full press pack on the Evo X (and new Prototype S being debuted at Geneva Motor Show), before sitting down for a welcome and video briefing from Lance Bradley, Mitsubishi Motor’s Director of Sales and Marketing.

We were then split up into four groups to take part in four different driving ‘exercises’ throughout the day with Evo X and the new Lancer. The vast majority of cars at the launch were SSTs – as these make up 65% of the cars Mitsubishi are bringing this year, although there were a couple of FQ-360s present on the day.

Our group’s introduction to the new car was the High Speed Circuit where we Mick and I took turns in a Lightning Blue Evo X SST alongside an instructor. The new ‘box took a little getting used to and we started with ‘Normal’ mode, or automatic if you prefer, which wasn’t very well suited to the circuit it has to be said. However, switching to Sport mode which can be done in flight, the car takes on a completely different persona becoming instantly more sharp, responsive and involving – more Evo-like. There was no discernable difference whether you opted to use the paddles or let the ‘box change for you whilst keeping your right foot planted – it made the changes at 6000rpm and changed down just as rapidly and when required. Amazing!

Pulling over momentarily to come to a halt so Super Sport mode could be selected (this can’t be switched in flight), the SST took on a another degree of menace, and held each gear until the red line, wringing every last ounce of power from the car. After 15 minutes driving the circuit we picked up Mick who was taking photos, ready for his go behind the wheel.

The next exercise was the Wet Grip Handling area where we all took out the new Lancer 1.8 on the wet pave and concentric circle to experience the new ASC (Active Stability Control) and ABS. We then transferred to the Evo X which with 4WD made quick work of the wet grip without any ASC, but was noticeably improved when turned on.

After a spot of lunch, some more photos and a few rides for 4 lucky journos with Guy Wilks in the current Mitsubishi Evo 9 works rally car, we moved down to the “Rally” Adverse Handling Circuit. This tight and twisty tarmac circuit is used to test car’s agility and handling characteristics, and after a couple of sighting laps with the instructor we took our turns behind the wheel. The SST both myself and Mick feeling quite smug when we caught up the other EvoX’s on the track!

The last exercise was the Lancer Road Route, but as this focussed solely on the Lancer 1.8 saloon we took the opportunity to sit down in the hospitality area to interview Lance Bradley about the new car, Mitsubishi’s plans for the EvoX and Sportback.

Before we left we managed to find the one FQ-360 that was being used on track for Mick to have a few laps in and compare against his Evo 9 GT, and take some shots of the fully spec’d FQ-360 at the Reception area. You’ll be able to read what he thinks of the new car elsewhere on the Forum, and a full report on the launchand in the next issue of the MLR magazine.

All in all a fantastic day for which Mick and I we’d like to thank Andy Wertheim (Press & PR Manager), Paul Brigden (Ralliart General Manager) and Lance Bradley (Sales & Marketing Director) for inviting us along and being one of the first to experience the new Evo X. Actually it’s more accurate to say ‘two cars’ as I believe the new Evo X SST is exactly that; a comfortable, well mannered and easy to drive car that can be used in the busiest of city centres, but then at the flick of a switch becomes the real A&B road destroyer we all know and love!

Great write up and the X seems to be winning quite a few people over now.

I hope Mt's is run in before the silverstone sprint, as I can't wait to see how it compares to some of the older EVOs.
