Time Attack Round 1 - Official Press Release
Zen take the win and set a new Time Attack Record at Donington!
With full grids and a fantastic track, the weekend couldn’t have started any better with early arrivals on Friday night, the pits began to fill up as the drivers and teams made Donington their home for the weekend.
First thing Saturday morning was a sight, the entire Paddock area filled with the best tuned cars in the country, all having wheels changed, oils checked and last minute adjustments being made, there was a real buzz of excitement going around and a clean sheet for 2007. After the drivers briefing the un-timed warm up session got underway with the cars leading out onto the track to get familiar with Donington’s National Circuit. Once over and a short break, the cars got ready to begin their attack on the circuit, with the Pro competitors lining up first to go out.
One by one the cars lead out and Donington burst into action with the enormous roar of a few thousand horsepower rumbling its away around the track. From the start it was clear that the Ollie Clark from Roger Clark Motorsport was on a flyer with the RCM car laying down lap times and instantly breaking the Time Attack record for the circuit which was held by the Litchfields Impreza from 2006 but it didn’t end there, no sooner had that happened the Zen Performance Subaru also posted a record breaking time, beating the RCM car by just two tenths of a second.
In Club Challenge the front runners were coming forward with Ron Kiddell in the RK Tuning Skyline laying down quick times, sitting just behind the MAD Developments car of Kevin Atkins.
As the practice sessions came and went the lap times kept falling with both Pro and Club cars running quicker and quicker. With Saturday’s sessions gone, Sunday morning was going to be where the pressure started. With a warm up and then the qualifying, Sunday was only for heroes and there would be no place for anyone not running on the edge.
As the Pro Super Battle got underway once more the Zen Peformance car, driven by BTCC driver Matt Allison stormed ahead, posting 1.14 lap times, the quickest of the weekend. Pounding away closely behind was the RCM car, who whilst continued to run quicker wasn’t able to match the pace of the Zen car and missing out by only half a second.
A first for Time Attack saw the Audi-powered Elise of Gugliemi Motorsport falling in behind these two and shadowing the rest of the Japanese field all bar Renton Lewis in his Ford Sierra Cosworth who battled within the 1.18 bracket who finally ended up with 7th place.
Also starting to catch up after problems forced him out on Saturdays sessions was Sumo Power’s Rob Barnes who had finally shown a glimmer of the potential to come from the Evo and to the delight of most in the pits who wished him better luck than last year who claimed a hard earned 5th place just behind Simon Norris in his SWB Evo9.
In Club Challenge the fight continued on as Ron Kiddell kept DCY’s Goerge Beavers at bay throughout the last session and again in the finals and went on to run the quickest in the Club Challenge Forced Induction category with Samuel Kerr 2nd and Kev Aktins 3rd.
In Club Challenge Naturally Aspirated the competition was fierce as Dixon Cheng led the way in his Honda DC2 to claim 1st, followed by the BMW of Jeff Mileham and the J’s Racing DC5 of Simon Miskelly having to take 3rd place.
