The winter is quickly approaching which means that the car is almost ready to come off the road. Like many, the underside is in need of some loving and seeing as I plan on keeping the 6 it would pay to do the work myself in my own time.
I have read through a few resto threads on here and been very impressed by the level of commitment from owners to there projects and I think if I can achieve half the final result that some have then I'd be more than happy [emoji106]
At the moment I'm in the process of collecting bits and pieces to get me started, what I wanted to know is where is the best place to buy products needed for the underneath? Must be a decent site which would have the majority of stuff I'd be looking for? Things like rust bullet, stonechip, various consumables il be needing etc. And how much of each have you bought or used on your cars as a rough idea?
Today i got the ball rolling and managed to land myself a deluxe roll over jig so that's one less thing to worry about [emoji108]
Any help here would be ideal, especially from those of you that have gone through it [emoji1605]
First get it raised to as high as possible on high axle stands if you are doing it on your back, get masks and different flap wheels and wire wheels and drill and grinder. Buy a roll off paper and cover all the paint work ,glass etc and tape it with masking tape, strip everything off and if want to rebold everything go on the Rosssport site and buy what kits you wish. I payed about £550 for bolts and some brackets and some stuff in the engine bay. Paint I used rust bullet automotive but one tin reacted but the last time I done it on my 8 I used 121 epoxy and that was very good but research is best. I had a small air compressor so sprayed mine and came up great, adds to the fun.:crackup:
Give member plip1953 on here a PM. He has done a fantastic job on his X RS and has been very helpful at advising me on the process and the products he has used etc.
Always good to chat to someone who has been hands on. He has pictures of his work too which can be inspiring and keep you motivated when you begin to realise it's a long and hard job :handsup:
My top tip would be not to use a cup type wire wheel, stick with the flat twisted knot style as when the tip wears, you can easily flip the grinder over to get back on a cutting edge.
The composite wheels are very good for taking the remaining bits off that the wire wheel misses.
As already said, it's a FILTHY job, so mask and goggles. And bargain a lot longer than you think to do it....
Paints wise, I tried something different and gave Buzzweld RCP primer followed by their CIO topcoat. No grumbles so far, certainly went on easily. I also love a bit of Halfords Aluminium paint on any alloy parts to stop them oxidising.
The only other advice I would offer is to decide before you start what you want to achieve; rust proofed and functional or concours. It is VERY easy to end up going concours when doing this (starts with new bolts, then brackets, so on and so on until you're spending a fortune and won't ever want to get the car wet again), I was surprisingly disciplined and didn't go to that degree as I want to drive my car but know it's not about to rot out from under me!
Thanks buddy, I'm certainly not after a show finish underneath but will make sure I spend the time and put in the effort to get it right, not just for my own peace of mind but for any potential buyer if I ever come to sell it. At least i can be sure it's all sound!
Here's what I used on my resto (roughly from what I can remember)
4 500ml tins of rust bullet
50 party bowls Tesco 30p or so
50 disposable paint brushes multi pack off ebay
about 10 flat twisted wire brush attachements for grinder £1.50 or so from chalpins
loads of Stanley blades to get into the seams, heavy duty from b and q
5l of panel wipe with loads of lint free rags, ebay job 1-2 litre will do though
about 40 cans of white stonechip 500ml from euro etc
10 cans of clear
2tubes of tigerseal in grey
That gave gave my underside 2 coats of rust bullet, 2 coats of stonechip per wheel arch and good coverage underneath. Lots of seam sealer packing the seams.
Leave about a week then coat it all in clear.
If you can roll onto a spit and use spray gear the stonechip can be bought in 1 litre tins at a way cheaper price than aerosol.
Then if using rust bullet with spray gear you need to factor in thinners etc.
Absolutely [emoji108] that is the sort of answer I was after!
I have seen and looked through a fair few restos but none that specify what to buy, in what quantities and where from so thankyou.
I will be using a spray gun to apply pretty much all of it, have all the facilities at work here to do so.
Looking forward to starting it, not so much looking forward to seeing my car in a hundred pieces [emoji52]
And for all the hard to get to places these above will shrink as you use them and can be used in those hard to get areas but you will need wire wheels aswell.
Once you back to bare metal you have some choices of what to use
I did rustbullet 2coates
Then seam sealer
Another coat rust bullet
2 top Coates same colour as car I had this made as brush on from car auto paint place they can do it cans aswell.
2 Coates of clear lacquer.
