2005 Evo IX FQ-320 with mild mods

*** OFF THE MARKET *** *** TAKEN OFF THE MARKET *** *** OFF THE MARKET ***

Offered for sale only on the MLR and with some tangible regret because it is such a fantastic driver's car...

2005 Evolution IX FQ-320

Electric Blue

107,000 miles

Owned from new, first registered 6 Sep 2005 - 55 plate. Full service history and meticulously maintained (see later for service and maintenance schedule). Last service recently on 2 May 17
A massive dossier of all service, maintenance and repair work and parts bought is included with car.
MOT expires Nov 2017

Exterior:

Paintwork in good condition
MR360 carbon front splitter, painted body colour
18" Ultralite A-tech wheels custom painted in dark grey metallic centre graded out to silver rims
Good Year Eagle F1 Assymetric 2 - loads of tread remaining
Ralliart mud-flaps newly fitted
PIAA aero silicone wipers newly fitted (wiper arm recently replaced and painted satin black)

Bad points:
Small dent in rear passenger side door - dent repair would easily sort this
Slight surface rust beginning to appear on lower leading edge of rear arches - this is only surface rust and can easily be fully repaired
Car has seen some bodywork/paint over the years mainly from stone-chips and unavoidable scratches from public car parks.

Engine:

Rod Job and forged drop-in pistons carried out by NR Autosport in May/June 2015 on 91,000 mile engine. Engine was reported as in very good internal condition with no damage or wear to cylinder bores. Full cylinder-head strip and refresh/rebuild. Valves re-ground and valve seats re-cut. Head skimmed. Injectors cleaned and flow-tested, new cam-belt etc. (See Service Invoice Jun 15)

Bad points:
Slight oil seep from sump seal, maximum 1 or 2 drips tell-tale per week. Engine uses no oil, though and never needs any top-up. Sump just needs removed and re-seated/re-sealed.

Parts Used for engine refresh:

85mm JE pistons
Manley H-beam rods
ARP head studs
ACL rod bearings
Walbro fuel pump 255ltr/hr
Cambelt
1.3mm head gasket
NR baffled oil sump with black powder-coat

Supporting modifications:

Link G4+ plug and play ECU mapped by NR. Coil-on-Plug ignition system running full sequential ignition on Link G4+ with MAF removed and mapped on boost sensor
Original turbo running 1.8 bar boost
MAC 3-port boost solenoid
3mm lash adjusters (will be replaced in the next few weeks due to intermittent very slight tappet noise)
Mishimoto alloy radiator with slim-line fans installed
Mishimoto Race alloy intercooler
K&N cone filter on custom hard pipes
3" Scorpion downpipe, 3" silenced JapSpeed de-cat and full stainless 3" HKS Hi-Power Silent Exhaust - track friendly 90dB
Oil catch can installed
Alternator changed June 2015; Air-con compressor changed and system re-gassed June 2015

Chassis/drivetrain:

Meister-R GT1 adjustable suspension setup with pillow ball top mounts - running custom geometry settings
GT1 suspension will be serviced, stripped and rebuilt over the next couple of weeks prior to sale
SuperPro front roll-centre adjustment kit installed
BLOX roll-stopper lower engine mount - second gear known to be stiff on 6-speed gearbox when cold - this helps
Helix Organic clutch kit
Cusco style alloy strut braces front and rear: 3-point front and 2/3-point rear normally running 2-point but with boot attachment point installed to run 3-point for track-days
All worn suspension bushes have been recently replaced at Mitsubishi with OEM items (Apr 17)

Braking:

Standard Brembo calipers
M-Tech grooved and dimpled discs all-round
Project mu HC800 front pads; Ferodo DS2500 rear pads
Braided brake lines all round. Corroded brake pipes (reported in MOT) replaced with full braided lines.

Interior:

Standard FQ-320 interior in good condition
New MLR/Ralliart floor mats
Mechanical boost gauge and Innovate Air-Fuel-Ratio gauge installed on steering column
(AFR sensor installed into decat pipe)
Sony blue-tooth stereo with iPod and Aux inputs, microphone installed for hands-free calling
Momo metal pedal covers on brake and clutch pedals and Ralliart drilled metal cover on footrest

Bad points on interior:
Scratching on leather centre section of rear bench seat.
Minor scuffs on plastic rear shells of front seats. Nothing major.

Recall work carried out:

Light-stalk circuit board recall and passenger air-bag recall work completed in 2017
No outstanding recalls

Major repairs carried out:

Gearbox stripped and rebuilt twice during 2010/11 at circa 50,000 miles. First time was for 4th gear stripped teeth - a relatively common issue. Second time was for inability to select 3rd gear - we found the internal geared selector ring had cracked and expanded so that it wouldn't fit into the geared outer selector ring. Components replaced with new and input/output shafts were micrometer measured and properly shimmed by NR Autosport. No issues since then and gearbox feels very positive to use. Sometimes a little notchy going into 2nd when cold, but this is a known 6-speed 'box feature. Fitting the BLOX roll-stopper lower engine mount helps with this, but doesn't truly eliminate the notchiness.
AYC pump has been rebuilt.

IMPORTANT - Work that will be required on car:

This is the important bit and this is the reason that I am advertising the car on the MLR only and the reason for the low asking price. Recent inspection at AutoTorque has highlighted that the rear portion of the chassis rails are beginning to rust. They're not rotten yet, as such, and car is safe to drive, etc, but the rear rails will begin to rot out if not replaced or repaired soon. I have booked the car in at AutoTorque on 2 Oct 2017 - this is the very earliest that they are willing to take on this work, otherwise I would have it done now and prior to advertising the car. The work will take 1 week to complete. Quote for replacing chassis rails and completing a full under-body restoration, cavity wax and under-seal was around £4,500, with options to replace a number of bushes and other ancillaries at extra cost (which aren't worn, but while the sub-frames are out it is a good idea to do this at little-to-no extra labour charge). This would fully restore the under-body and give a car that would be a year-round care-free daily driver for a good number of years (AutoTorque supply a 5 year warranty on under-body restorations - but the work would definitely out-last this warranty by another 2-to-5 years. As a comparison, this car lasted over 10 years with the Mitsubishi under-seal before rust became an issue).

The car is still fine as it is at the moment, but the work will be required before the chassis rails begin to rot from the inside out. Now I know that these cars do rust and can rot badly, I would recommend that all Evo road cars get a restoration completed on the underside anyway as a preventative measure. I just wish I'd known this before and I would've had it done a couple of years ago as prevention.

With that fully disclosed the asking price will be firm £10,500.

So for a total outlay of around £15,000 if you went the whole AutoTorque restoration route, the car would be completely sorted and probably value at over this figure.

Pictures added Sun21 May.

First one was taken a couple of weeks ago before I made the Intercooler bracket stealthy.

This is how I made the visible part of the bracket "disappear" with satin black paint...

Garaged every night

Engine bay - the Tein top mounts are for the temporary suspension while the GT1s are getting re-build.

Also, see [my car] for a history of the car, mods list, and pictures

A "fair" price.
Buyer probably happier than the seller, but still a fair price.

Flash-to-bang less then 3.5 hrs with buyer having a 2hr journey to view. Gotta be some kind of record.

Ah well. An enforced break from Evos for me for a while. Don't see it being permanent, though.

Meister-R GT1 suspension currently being rebuilt for new buyer as promised.

These coil-overs are really standing up well to daily year-round driving. No corrosion issues at all on the threaded bodies or anywhere else.

Big change of plans.

We are changing the Mrs car now as well, and putting some money into a loft conversion.

My plan is to run a ~£3k Honda CTR from around 2004 for a while. Maybe even take it to the North Loop in July...
