Poor Headlight Brightness
Cars affected:
Possibly earlier cars but definitely Evo’s 5/6 & TME
Symptom:
Poor headlight brightness mainly on dipped beam.
Problem and cure:
The poor lighting problem is put down to the design of the headlights fitted on the Evo 5/6 and TME. Dipped beam is not very bright and has a very sudden cut off point,
full beam is better but still not ideal.
The cheapest solution is to fit the ‘Ultra Bright’ bulbs that tend to be at least 30% brighter for the same wattage output. The ‘Ultra Bright’
bulbs are available from many manufacturers including PIAA, Osram, Phillips, Ring etc. and are stocked by most motor factors. This will improve the lighting although it still may not be ideal.
Fitting higher wattage bulbs is illegal in the UK and can also possibly overload the cable o melt the reflectors. A complete headlight unit swap is available from Co-ordsport and Cibie HID
systems are also available, both these options are extremely expensive. If you are doing a lot of night driving then consider fitting driving lamps although they obviously will not improve dipped
beam.
Approximate cost of repair:
Set of ‘high output’ bulbs - £30
