My car currently has darkened glass in all the windows although the front windows seem to be a lighter shade. Having had a month to think about things I have to admit I am not overly smitten and am thinking of changing back to clear glass.
The car is black and several people have commented that they like the look of it. I would appreciate your comments guys, i.e like / dont like / would change it etc.
Also where do I stand legally with this? I was parked near a police car the other day and all the copper said was nice car!
Legally any window in front of the 'B' pillar (excluding the bit's of the windscreen they don't count as 'viewable') must admit at least 70% of light. the windows behind the 'B' pillar can be boarded up for all the law cares
As to the taste thing, up to you mate, your car , if you don't like it, get it taken off
Get rid on safety grounds - a dark night - rain drops on the window - whoops didn't see that micra - ouch - squint evo!
And that without saying that it also looks cheap!
Hi Paxo, funny you posted this mate, i had the tinted thing going on with my car and to be honest i hated it, it felt like i was going to get a tug from the 5-0 any min (5-0 police) so i decided after i got home to get rid of the tinted windows
I thought when i got my car they were properly tinted ones but looking closer they had a thin crappy laminated tinted peel off kinda deal going on so i just peeled them off and now it looks so much better for it and most importantly it does'nt feel like the curtains are drawn and i can see at last, their was a bit of the glue left on the windows so anyone thinking of doing the same just get some turps substitute and a few old raggs and the glue comes off a treat, leave the fumes to evapourate jobs a good-un,
Yeah see what you mean chappers reckon mine might be the same but reckon it may be tinted glass will have a look tomorrow, need to have a look at a black seven with clear glass will have a look through the register see if I can find one.
I was stopped by the police and VOSA and given a prohibition notice and told to remove them. I know it was the standard lecture bit at the side of the road, but they pointed out that if i was in an accident I may have insurance problems as the car is illegal. Don’t know how true this is and of course i couldn't check.
The guys at the VOSA station who re-tested the windows after the removal pointed out that even clear glass won’t be at 100% so basically most if not all tints would then be illegal when fitted on the front.
My mate tints windows and we had a play with one of the light meters. We couldnt find any tints that could legally be fitted to factory tinted windows.
As for factory tints, apparently some BMW's which came with tinted windows from the factory were below the minimum light transmission level when tested using the device.
It does seem as though VOSA isnt on a crackdown on this at the moment as i know of plenty of people with light smoked front side windows who have had no problems.
I agree with most here that it looks cool. However, for reasons of legality and safety I'd take the tints off the front side windows. Might look a bit like a hearse, but who's to say that is a bad thing?
It's not a VII, but my car pic should give you an idea of what rear only dark tints looks like on a black VIII.
They have not to be below 70%, I have legal tints on mine and my dads mate is a traffic cop and he checked them with the metre and they were legal Also :moon: a lot of tint places have a metre so they can check before you leave but the place i got mine have legal film anyway
Front side windows are marked AS2 which is the legal tint so only clear film would be legal
From Mr Tinter
This means that if any window tinting company or manufacturer installs films to the front driver or passenger side windows or front quarter windows, they are in infringement of the law.
They have not to be below 70%, I have legal tints on mine and my dads mate is a traffic cop and he checked them with the metre and they were legal Also :moon:
I like the look with a slight tint on the windows.
If your gonna take them off the front then do the rears at the same time as cars with just the rears tinted look :gay:
