Have I missed something ? I can't believe it's nearly 9am and no one has mentioned last nights Top Gear and the time the M5 did in relation to another 4 door saloon car which, despite being faster, was blanked in the comments afterwards
Didn't the comment go " above it are only supercar type stuff", not, "oh look, there's a jap four door costing A LOT less than half the price of the M5, just above it"
Firstly, let's get one thing straight. The Evo and M5 are very different cars and I would argue that you can admire both. In fact, IMO, they are so different I wouild want both in my ultimate garage.
Having said that, surely the stunning thing about the M5 time is that a 2 wheel drive car saloon, weighing as much as it does, 500 kgs more than an Evo, can manage such a remarkable time.
The other thing that came out of the programme is what a prat Clarkson can be at times. All that stuff about the satnav and setting up the preferences. The satnav is the same as any 5 series and he didn't comment on that when he reviewed that car and as for the preferences, surely you just set them up once.
I suspect that Clarkson hates BMW so much he just couldn't bring himself to have total praise for the car. He still had to have a go.
You joker - I took those photos last night with my phone and posted them up on the M5 board - by the time I come to post them on the MLR they're already here :beerchug:
I've been explaining the M5 isn't the fastest production 4-door saloon, but they refuse to accept that the FQ400 is a production car. They all got very upset - they want to compare the M5 to the standard VIII. That almost made it round the track faster than the M5 anyway
Evo 8 > M5 to a ridiculous extent! Took the 400 for a nice long cruise on saturday, and apart from the fact that I needed the whole of sunday to recover from my bad back, it was bloody stunning. The turn-in is so much more direct, and in general it's considerably easier and nicer to drive it hard. At high speeds though the M5 does take over - I keep looking down and finding myself at 130 whereas in the evo I rarely go much over 100, unless it's a clear road and I feel like the whooosh in 5th
Oh, come on! Classy an SL?
With marble and granite trimmings? Why not bronze wheels?
I'd think I'm driving a mausoleum, not a car...
If all you want from a car is class, why not a Bentley or RR?
I'd choose a nice Mercedes all day long. Personal preference tho - I like Mercedes and I love SL's.
If your going to go as far as Bentley and RR, why not Lambo and Ferrari etc.
Wouldn't compare a Bentley or Rolls to a Merc/Bimmer anyway.
It's kinda confusing the Evo FQ400 and M5 demand IMO. Firstly, less complication with the BMW. The 'M' badge has carried a huge fan base over many more years than the Evo. Also there are lots of different types of Evo's where as there is just 1 M5.
M5 is more prestigious but not necessarily a better car.
I can't comment as I've driven neither, but from a drivers POV I'd imagine the Evo being a better car. And not much more than HALF the cost.
From a driver's point of view I can confirm the evo's really easy to drive and monumentally quick, whereas the M5 has the sorted rear-wheel-drive chassis and so gives you that feeling of control and ability to flick the rear about and get it sliding a bit. Though I love the whole drifting thing, I still prefer to drive the evo!
Surely to us the whole debate of whether an FQ400 is a production car is irelivent. The time is there for all to see and anybody could by an FQ400, so that's good enough for me.
However , strictly speaking The FQ400 isn't a production car by almost any definition. It was not built in the manufacturers factory or in the factory of a recognised manufacturer. It isn't type approved or even SVA tested. Its an aftermarket add on. It does not have a manufacturers warranty but a warranty from the UK franchise. If anything went wrong, you have no claim against Mitsubishi Japan at all.
But as I said above - so what. You could buy it from a main dealers showroom and that in itself means it deserves its place on the "production" board
Silver car in his avatar is an M3, you can tell by the lights, the fact it's shorter and IIRC the front bumper at the bottom is a little different. Hard to tell from that picture and angle but it's deffo an M3 not an M5.
