as you are all aware i have just collected my evo8 mr320 and was reading through the handbook regarding the intercooler spray.the book didnt make it clear so can somebody help me so i know. When i push the switch to the auto position and the light illuminates on the dash this means its on and will spray the intercooler when necessary, yes?
should i have it in this position all the time or only when i intend to do some hard driving? when the switch is in the manual postion and the light on the dash is not illuminated is the spray off completely and will only spray if i push the button??
secondly,i have had the car nearly a week now and on at least three ocassions she has stalled as i approach lights or a junction and i dip the clutch!!! is this a common problem and why is it happening, does it need to go back to the garage?
the only time you will need the I/C spray is if you have been sitting in traffic (heat soak) and you intend on giving the car some welly as soon as it clears. its not really needed in our climate.
does the car have a non std dumpvalve? i.e. can you hear a loud whoosh wen changing gears whilst on boost??
RE the intercooler don't worry about it. You're right in that on auto it will spray when it "needs to" which is never. On manual it will spray when you push the button which is pretty useless anyway. It's something they need on the rally cars so it needs to be present on the homologated road-version, although it's useless on the road car.
As for stalling, many VIIIs stall when reversing and I've also read about some that stall when coming to a stand-still going forward. I actually PMd GlobalGB about this two days ago cos I did a search and saw he had the same problem. The "solution" seemed to be to raise the idle revs to 2k. Do a search for "stall reverse" and you'll find the thread.
Unfortunately, this stalling business is common with MRs. Although mine doesn't (luckily) do it...I have seen how annoying it can be. Not to mention embarrassing when you pull up at lights and have to restart the ****er.
Did you buy the car from new?...if not, are you sure it hasn't been decatted?...that sometimes is responsible. Failing all this, a VI dump valve may cure it.
Thanks for the replies alex and aidy
so am i right in thinking that at this moment in time there is no cure for this "problem".
oh and alex, the car was bought new and is standard,no decat pipe.(yet)

Well, either ask the dealer to fit a VI dump valve or ....get your decat pipe fitted and pay a visit to WRC for an EcuTek remap. I think the latter would very likely solve the problem and put a huge grin on your face
Whilst the capacity and functionality of the water spray are "limited" on the road car, it can be helpful in high temperatures when sitting on full boost for long periods - e.g. at the Nurburgring in the middle of summer...
If you run full boost for prolonged periods, you will get "heat soak" causing the charge temp to rise and the ignition to retard, loosing power - spraying the I/C will reduce this *slightly*, so long as you're travelling fast enough to cause evapouration and slowly enough so that the water actually hits the IC!
Some of the water can also pass on to the water radiator at speed to help with cooling of this, although again, the effect is marginal...
Cheers
