Hi,

Firstly, like to say, this forum is spot on. Spent a lot of time looking around, and there's loads of good stuff on here. Good work.

Right, I've recently bought an E7, it's good really good history, but there are a couple of things that I don't understand and wonder if anyone has similar experiences.

The car has the following non-stock parts:
Ralliart ECU
Blitz exhaust
Apexi induction kit
Manual boost controller
Turbo elbow

When i boot it, i seem to get a reasonable amount of smoke from the back. Can't quite determine if it's grey or black??!

1) I want to remove the manual boost controller, can i simply run the boost hose from the bottom of the tubo to the actuator? Do i need to do anything else?
2) I removed the hose that runs from the apexi air filter to the turbo and found quite a lot of oil. Can anyone tell me what this means?
3) When the engine is running, i can hear a slight whining noise. It's speed increased with the engine rather than movement. Do these engines make this sort of noise, or do i need somebody to look at it?
4) If the turbo, for arguments sake is on the way out, does anybody know the most cost efficient way of sorting it out?

Any other help, info or links would be great.

Cheers,
Dan

Smoke when on boost will be turbo bearings failing.

Saw an e7 turbo for £200 odd quid in another thread second hand.

Turbo can be reconditioned by a specialist.

Or buy a good second hand VIII or IX tubby and upgrade.

1) dont know,

2) turbo seal/bearings.

3) as above

4)answered above.

If you do this you will run about 0.8 bar boost, the stock setup runs a T piece between the turbo outlet and the actuator, with the 3dr part of the T going to the boost solenoid which is under where the stock air filter box is. The pipe from the turbo to the T also has a restrictor jet which I think has an internal diamiter 0f 1.2mm. There is a good article here.

It would be as well to get the AFRs ( air fuel ratios) checked to see if this is your problem with the exhaust smoke.

re : black/grey smoke when you boot it

I think this is quite normal. My E7 Fq300 used to produce quite a lot of black smoke when giving it some stick. I've had it remapped now and don't get this "problem"........ I think it's just running a little rich (protection for the engine?). I wouldn't worry about it unless it is excessive (i mean clouds of the stuff)

Depends how much mate...All Evo's will have some....
Haven't had the car that long, so not sure what's what. I took the air inlet hose off and cleaned out the oil. I'll have another look at the end of the week and see how much it's collecting.
Also, it's going in for a 9k service on friday at ralliart dealer, so hopefully they might be able to say one way or another.

Is the whine coming from the Turbo by any chance ? It could all be related. A turbo on its way out may whine (My old one did sounded like a supercharger) and smoke a little...Just check the colour of smoke black is grand bluey not so good...If it is the turbo its not the end of the world anyway...

What boost are you running at the moment ?

I need to have the bonnet up and listen carefully. When I bought it, it had a manual boost controller and was running 1.4-1.5 Wasn't very comfortable with this, so have taken out the boost controller and it's now running .9 approx. Cheers for the advice

??
but you've got a Ralliart ecu which has a different map & allows higher boost
+ the reason for the black smoke....
as has been said....they run rich

re: colour of smoke
knackered turbo bearings will give white smoke as oil is burnt ....not black

get the air/fuel ratio checked
get some new plugs

re: the whine
other than turbo....
have the belts been changed recently with new tensioners etc ?

I understand that the new ECU will allow me to run more boost, but until I've got my head around what I perceive to be problems, I wanted to tune it down (in case i'm doing it some damage)

I'm in the process of sorting a new turbo, either way, I'll have a spare or a replacement.

Car's going in for service on friday, so can get them to check plugs and air/fuel mixture then

The car had it's big service lesss than 10k ago, and from what I understand, all the belts are done then?

You talk trash.

White smoke is water.

thanks for that...very friendly
there's really no need to be rude...especially when someone is trying to help

white / grey
grey / white
but more white than black !!

in your own post, you've just said smoke
you didn't mention any colour ?

when my last hybrid turbo (seals) went bang ....I was surrounded by white smoke
and it certainly wasn't water

White smoke is water ...if u have ever had u r HG go u will know this ( like i have  thankfully not on the evo)

going by what u have said , i would pressume what u are seeing is black smoke (ie running rich) which would make sense if u r running .9 bar and the ecu is mapped for 1.4-1.5 bar

i would get u r car to a decent tuner ASAP mate , they will be able to diagnose the problem quickly may save u shelling out on a new turbo that may / may not be needed ??

Hi guys,

thanks for the advice so far. To be fair the car was smoking quite a lot before i removed the boost controller. Came home from work and poked my head under the bonnet. Couple of things;

1) The whining i was talking about is not coming from the turbo, it's coming from near the belt cover. Could be one of the associated pumps i guess?
2) Kind of resigned to the turbo being on the way out. My friend was following me and said that the smoke was grey(ish) and smelt of oil!

At least i hope it's that and not something more serious..?

going back a few years now, but .....
from above:
1. often...but not always
ref: Steve C's post and what I was referring to... as it's happened to me...

2. ??
Ralliart ecu runs rich = ecu a/f control map mainly to avoid detonation and help cool pistons
whether running 0.9 or up to 1.5 bar = ecu waste gate operation control
and why best results are obtained by using a boost controller

Ps if u can wait a week or 2 i will have an evo VII turbo that has only done 21k for sale ? if u r intrested , its been replaced by a 9 turbo
