View Full Version : Just fitted Pagids

I have just fitted some replacement pads to my EVO 6.
'Pagid RS 4-2'
They squeal like f**k. I have never had this with a car before.
They are louder than the Blitz Nur-Spec exhaust which is saying something.
Have I made a bad choice of pads and is the £177 I paid a waste on money.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I fitted RS4-2's about 600 miles ago and they have never been that bad. To start with they squealed a very little at low speeds. When I fitted them I was very liberal with the copperslip which I am sure helped (no, not on the disks :D).
Having read various posts about this I concluded that it is also very important to bed them in properly, and fairly agressively. I followed the Pagid recommended bedding in and the high speed bedding in recommendations. Do a search because I think I have posted this elsewhere. I am delighted with my pads.
Hope this helps.

If I ask very nicely could you let me know what the bedding in process
is as I can never get the search facility to work properly.
I watched the pads being installed and they used quite a bit of copperslip.
Cheers in advance

Try this link. I did both parts and then repeated it a week later.

Simon7extreme,
Simon I have just seen your post in regional meets.
I have now covered 212 miles since having the pagids
fitted and they still sqeal like anything. I did follow
the bedding in instructions and have done quite a lot
of motorway miles with high speed braking which has
made no difference at all.
I am now considering taking the pads out and putting
brembo pads back in.
Any ideas.

I've had the 4-2's for a while now initially the squeal was VERY loud but it has gotten much better now they are run in, I do still get some squeal occasionally at low braking speeds but its not that bad anymore, all I'd say is give them a bit more time, mine didn't start getting noticeably better till about 500 miles (maybe more than that)

Likewise with the Mintex F4R's the squeal didn't completely disappear until about 700-800 miles but as that was only 3 weeks driving for me then it wasn't too much hardship. Stick with it for another 300 miles or so at least and have a few more goes at the heat curing, they should get quieter as you go along.
People here tend to think that pads that take less temp will squeal less [img]http://www.lancerregister.com/graphics/tongue1.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| absmiddle ><!--e4-->
Skeletor,
A bit of high speed braking won't do it, you have to absolutely muller them, make your calipers go dark blue, drive to 150mph and brake to zero on the point of lock-up in the dry and do this 10 times in a row. Your pads should now be squeal free.

Pagids now removed.
After 350 miles the noise was getting even worse.
Tried them without the shims, no difference.
Re-installed with extra copper ease twice and no difference.
I have now installed Brembo pads front and rear from
Kingswood Mitsubishi, no squeal. Just need to bed them in.
What a waste of £177.
Cheers for all the replys and help but none of it seemed to work.
Skeletor
Wanna sell them then?
Great for trackday use when theyll get up to correct working temperature, and helmets cover over unwanted noise!
RogerRally
no you have made a mistake, as others say they WILL come right
if you cant stand the noise then get some wurth HT and spray on the backs of pads (as used for trucks which have no option to run hard pads) and this will shut them up during the bed in period
copper slip woft
bed in period can be long especially if u dont drive that hard
first squeal slow, then squeal when warmed up, then finally gone
when they get very worn the squealing comes back for some reason

My RS 14 only squeeled when cruising around. Three corners down a mountain road and they were quiet again.
But the RS 14 are anyway not intended for road use.
Mike
Agree with EVOtrak -defo a mistake going back to Brembos. Guess you don't do any track days or seriously hard driving, because what you should be saying is that you couldn't believe how much stronger the Pagids were and fade free.
As you never said that, there is no way you were braking hard enough to de-squeak the Pagids.
I wouldn't use anything other than Pagid RS42s on my car.

I find it hard to believe that all the PROFFESIONAL drivers out there can determine your driving techniques just by squealing brakes.
I do drive hard and if you see the rippling on the edge of my tires you would agree. I am doing a track day at Brands on the 19th April. Before you say it I know the Brembo's will fade, I will just have to see how they perform on the day.
I did notice that the bite from the pagids was a lot sharper but I just couldn’t put up with the squeal. I personally do not find it tolerable to have any squeal from the brakes as I drive the car as my main mode of transport.
Some people may not mind a bit of squeal but I do.
I have to agree the pagids are better pads but not for every day driving if you have to put up with any squeal.
Cheers again for all the replies.
Skeletor
frustrating things these pagids!
the noise can be really annoying but it can be fixed
first taking the car for a thrash may not cure it - in fact it might make it worse, end up glazing the pads
don't go supersonic and then jump on cold brakes either, ditto to above
second try the wurth, you havent explored all the options yet - much better than copper slip or shims
the HT part is 'heavy traffic' ie used for truck brakes, which have very hard pads, magic stuff
third try this:
find a quiet road, and use your left foot to brake, on off on off slowly increasing the on time compared to the off
brakes will squeal louder and louder and the pitch will go higher and higher and then violla they will be quiet
need to keep it up for a bit, turn the stereo up
if they start to wobble when you are doing this then you are heating the disks to quickly so take longer
to go fully on otherwise you may warp the disks, but need to get them hot, just do it slowly
once the pads are very hot they will feel better, for want of a better description like they are 'soft' feel like you are pressing rubber against the disk not hard metal
now drive the car for a bit but dont touch the brakes, let them cool naturally as you drive along
the squeal may come back so may need to repeat a few times or after slow speed running
andrew
btw: this is completely different to the bedding instructions given

Cheers for all the info guys.
I have decided to keep the Pagids just for track days. Could not live with them every day.
I am doing a track day on the 19th at Brands and hope these will do the business when
it comes to stopping. This is my first track day.
Skeletor
19th April? Who is that with? I have been looking for some decent days in April - not many available...
Didn't mean to #### you off with the pad comments....

Blade,
You did'nt #### me off. I am p****d off with having to paying over £500 on pads since wednesday.
£208 on the Pagids including fitting and £312 for brembo's all round.
The track days is with Easytrack. I'm going with a few guys from Xoticar. Be good to see you there
and that awesome car of yours.

Everyone has their own opinion, but I really prefer the rs14 pagids than the rs42 that are more made for wet conditions or gravel. But I like the brakes to be very hard and I don't like them progressive.
About the squeal, no problem with the rs14 in the front, but if they squeal try to do the following.
Take the pagids off, and smooth slightly the right and left edges of the pad material where it's in contact with the disc (sorry I don't know the name of the thing you have to use to do that in english), this will reduce vibrations.
Take the black anti squeal sticker of the standard pads and put it on the pagid pads
Take the second metal shim and fit it on the rear of the pad
Clean the inside of the caliper with wd40
Put some special grease on the back of the pads
MAXI, YOU RULE! ;)
(How would you know about brakes, you never use them!!)

It's very seldom but I have to admit this time Maxi hits the nail on the head. If you like stopping like driving in a brick wall then RS 14, but when modulation is required then get something else.
Cheers
Mike
Thanks guys for pointing out what pads I really should be using as the old Mintex 1155 I'm sure are on there way out after two track days. Where is the best place to get the Pagids from?
Cheers

To be fair to Skeletor, over the last couple of days my brakes have squeeled a bit more than the had done before. Still very acceptable FOR ME. It might not be for others.
Justin
No, I have never heard of Bendix anti squeel gum. Is this for real? I thought Bendix was a type of chocolate!
Its for real [img]http://www.lancerregister.com/graphics/Wilk.gif border|EQU| 0 align|EQU| middle >
Used to use full race carbon pads on my supra...BOY did they squeel !!!!!
Bendix anti squeel dramatically cut the noise.
Justin
Skeletor, how did the Pagids perform at the track? Have you left them in? I just bought new Brembo's for the front of mine a couple of hundred miles ago and would be happy to swap for your pagids? As long as you didn't set fire to them at Brands!!

Jools,
I am not at Brands until the 19th April.
I have decided to keep the Pagids for track days and will take the Brembo's out for each meet.
I wouldn’t recommend them for every day use.
I might see how they are after the track day and see if the squeal stops.

have you tried the ds2500? they seem to be better than the standard and they don;t squeal at all. well not yet in 3 weeks anyway
sam
My mate fiited pagids to his 7 and they warped his disks on there first outing on the track, both of us had never had a problem with oem pads and i'm on my 3rd set, apperently the pagids were better though.
Nice :D change the discs!
Im sure he will but will you ever change your tune?
Skeletor,
I met you briefly at Donnington a couple of months back. I was in the Blue EVO 6.
I've just changed from DS2500 to Pagid Blues and the noise is f'ckng horrendous. Before anyone says try some hard braking, I spend all yesterday hammering around Anglesey's race track and frankly it made no difference at all!
The DS2500's never made a sound.
