guys,
i need to get a set of alloys and slicks for my VII
not too bothered what the rims look like but i am trying to work out what to go for 17" or 18". Presumably those Goodrich ex-touring car slicks will be cheaper for 17" or is there hardly any difference ? Are there any other pros/cons between using 17 or 18" with slicks ?
Also, what are the tyre sizes required/available ?
cheers
I'd probably say it depends on where your own preferences lie jackal. Unlimited funds (i.e. Blade), functionallity (i.e. me) or on the cheap ??
UF = brand new OZ, Comps etc. £1000 upwards + brand new slicks, £300 upwards = £1300 upwards for 17s, with 18s then probably add another 40-50% or something.
F = set of second hand comps, ekies (sorry can't spell) etc £500 + a set of ex BTCC slicks for £150 = £650
OTC = a set of free old slicks (from the scrap tyre pile at your local rally business) and have them fitted onto your original rims everytime you arrive at circuit :D
An educated guess would say that with 18s you get a fraction more rubber as the rolling radius is increased but (due to the increased rolling rad) an increased gear ratio. Again this can depend on what gears your running in your box?
Actually I noticed that the ex btcc slicks I bought are lower profile than the standard fit road tyres. This I like because as I run a standard box it should in theory give me a quicker acceleration time when on track and less tyre role (and the sidewall is as stiff as buggery  )
This is only my opinion so others may have different views, but If you want more specific technical details then maybe you should give Andy a call on 07968 048322. I bought my ex btcc slicks from him and I think he still has some left.
OK, got the rims sorted. Next question is, what compound should I be looking for? Hard medium or soft or just take what I can get? Any advice on this would be welcome.
