View Full Version : Best Tyres
I run yokohama AO48s on my EVO6 and the results are superb.
Has anyone else used them?
They are supposed to be far superior to the AO32s.

Post a price and shipping cost, please :)
The price I paid was £139 + VAT+fitting. Yes they can be supplied to France at cost or perhaps you could arrange your own shipping?
Where are you in France and I will confirm tomorrow costs.

In Nice. I can give you a VAT number :) If you could give me the shipping costs.
What compounds are available? Only S?
How do you identify differnet compounds?

Do you run these as road tyres? If so, what are they like in the wet. Have you had issues at motorway speeds with aquaplaning?
Thanks
simon
I run the tyres on dry days, track days and on Sprints and Hillclimbs.
The performance in the dry is incredible.
I drove about 100 miles in pouring rain once. I made it home but it was a bit hairy.
Put on the SO3s for wet days.
I have a quick release jack and a great electric torque wrench to help changing wheels.

Noise I can handle but I need to make sure I am going to make it home in one piece wet or dry :(

Hello
I run Yokohama AO38R and have done for 8000miles, In the wet and dry no problems at all in the wet tested up to 150mph,dry grip stunning wear rated is fantastic only about half worn and most of the time its driven like it been stolen:D .
Thanks Mark
These tyres are fitted as standard on the Lotus 340R. With no roof I guess that makes it a dry day car!
Unless you go for a spare set of wheels and swap around to suit the forecast.
I would not use them everyday in UK weather.
They would have been fine for the past six weeks though. Good old blighty!

Hello
I have used them for the last 2years no problems, normal wet roads ie roundabouts they offer the same amout of grip as the Michelin pilots that came off,If its raining hard I always look for the big puddels and be careful which I always do no matter what the tyres are on any car, after driving with these type of tyres I wont put a normal set on my cars.
Thanks Mark

Same as Mark. :)
M, you can identify compound by looking at the sidewall of the tyre. On my AO32Rs, it says "compound H" somewhere on the side.
Reason I am asking is I remember now being told that AO48s would not last longer than a few laps, but are otherwise awesome. I need these as a road tyre, so couldnt do with 100 miles lasting tyres.
On the AO32Rs, you can get 3 compounds: SS, S or H (Super Soft, Soft, Hard)
I'm running on Bridgestone Potenza S-01 's and after 4500 miles they don't seem to have worn at all. For day to day use they are fine and the grip is OK. They have the big advantage of not leaving an extra brown mark on wet roads !
They are also supposed to be 'run flats' although I hope I never have to find out.
Claudius, I am told this morning that these tyres are not officially available for anything other than the Lotus 340R. It should still be OK to get some though. Their is only one compound available. They do seem quite durable to me. I have done some very hard miles with only a little sign of wear. they are only available in 17" size.
Will confirm price to Nice later today.
By the way M is for Mike.
Trev, Did you see the TV show with the Police chase where a stolen EVO 6 went over a stinger and then drove for over 100 miles at high speed leaving the Cops standing with flat tyres. They even stopped for fuel and went off again.
The best 'all round' tyre surely is still Bridgestone. Good pedigree and tried & tested.

That may mean the load rating is wrong, couldn't it? Does a 340R use 225 x 45 /17??

S01's? They haven't been made for nearly 2 years! Did they come with the car? I ran these tyres a few years ago and the S02's are much better.

Not if you are talking about S03's. OK in the wet but well down on grip compared with S02's and no where near as progressive on the limit. I thnk that many now agree that for an all rounder, you can't get better than Pirelli P Zero Assimetricco Yellow's.
I believe the availabilty thing is purely commercial.
Size is 225x45x17
By the sounds of it your car is hardly standard so who knows whether the load rating suits the car. btw I used to spend a lot of time playing with small changes in pressures but I don't bother anymore. I just run 30 front 28 rear.
Cuwtoo, Yoko in the dry is 3 secs faster on a 60 second lap than Bridgestone SO3. I totally agree that SO3 is superior in the wet.

I wonder then why Sport Auto tested them in the latest issue on a GT3 with 18 inch wheels. Another UK sales hype.
BTW other contestants are the Dunlop Super Sport Race, Michelin Cups and Pirelli P Zero Corsa. Michelin was the fastest tyre around Hockenheim. Dunlop (very progressive, good grip) and Yoko (best handling, not progressive) slowest, Pirelli between them.

By the sounds of it, but also by the pictures and by driving it ;) (what a shame my digicam is screwed :frust: )

It suiting the standard Evo would be great already ;)

What a PITA! :D Good I have more qualified people than myself to determine the correct suspension hydraulics settings / diff settings / geometry and tyre pressures :D
Claudius. Do you compete in your car? If so what type of events.

No, my car doesnt conform to the GrN rules ;) :D
Might try a hillclimb one of these days :)
A few guys here are talking about organising a dedicated EVO Sprint or Hillclimb. Do you visit the UK at all?
Claudius
01-10-2002, 12:05
Sometimes, still got a few friends from Uni there :) but not often. Usually, they come visit ME because the weather's much better here, no bar closing times, lots of girls, etc.
Not yet been to the UK with my Evo, but Blade and a few others keep begging me to come kick their butt ;) :D Unfortunately, I wont be able to make Cadwell, but some time sooner or later I'll be there :)
What about you? Do you ever drive down to the French Riviera?
Drove to Cap d'Agde in my 1963 Triumph GT6 in 1989.
Take my EVO to the 'Ring' for a few days each year.
EVOs arn't best suited for long distance really are they!
Claudius
01-10-2002, 15:43
Definitely not!
I'll try and go to the ring soon, as well :) never been....
The ring is an amazing experience.
My advice to anyone planning a trip to the Ring is to buy a game for your PC called Grand Prix Legends (about £10). It is the only game weve found with the original Nurburgring track on it.
The Ring has 185 corners and is nearly 14 miles long. They say it takes 10 years to learn it properly. It sounds daft but the PC game really helps. It is dead accurate.
Sorry but my contact at Yokohama did not reply today he has end of month reports to do. Hopefully he will come back soon.
It seems that no-one else has tried AO48s out there?
Did you view the Insanity Test post on the Blah Blah forum earlier? Very Funny
Updated price is £132.17 each excluding VAT. available 1 week.
Price for delivery is silly expensive >£100 so I will try to get prices for you from one of our delivery people.
Do you have an account with a carrier?

No :(
Cost to ship 4 tyres on a small pallet to Nice approx £100, will take 3 to 4 days. Could get them there quicker if you pay more money.
What's your thoughts Claudius?

Sorry, Mike, I somehow missed this. (I think the "View New Posts" works in a way I havent fully grasped yet, no wonder, I'm blond  ...)
So that's 140 plus VAT each plus 100, ie. 170*4+100=780. Not cheap but not TOO bad.
Thing is: how long will these £800 worth of tyres last?
You mentioned that different compounds werent available; but how hard is the one you can get? I need something that lasts like the AO32R (compound H), around 3000 road miles or maybe a little less, but not under 2000).
I believe that the AO48 is a hard compound designed to last longer than motorsport tyres. It was co-designed by Yoko and Lotus (pretty good pedigree).
I think we're in experimental teritory here as no-one else seems to have used them. Perhaps we should try a new post asking specifically if anyone has tried them?
Also I do not think you will need to pay VAT, will you?
Plus the actual price was £132 making it £628 total:)
Claudius

Oh, that's true, no VAT :)
Hmm...
Yeah, let's ask about them (I have a feeling we'll be talking to each other again :D) ;)
I'll be interested in a set once I've got through my Dunlop Formula R's at Cadwell :). Have only seen the AO48's advertised in 'Demon Thieves' so far, and will probably not be the best price available
Claude, glad to see you can supply a VAT registration number to get your imports zero rated ;)
Steve.

interesting Simon .... The car is now only 6 months old from new and the tyres were fitted when I got the car, again brand new or very little wear. Possibly the originals are taken off and these put on from stock ???
I was interested in these tires as well. I know many Japanese tuners use them. I know Bozz does, at least on their track-attack Subaru.
Problem is, they are not available for purchase in the US

Darn link not working!
It looks like they are available in 18" 285/30ZR18, 265/35ZR18, 225/40ZR18, 245/40ZR18
Claude: are you using 17" wheels on your Evo?
Ok!
