View Full Version : MLR at Castle Combe - 3rd May

Yeah I know - we haven't been to Cadwell Park yet, but I'm now adding people to the reserve list on a daily basis and I don't want to be doing the same for MLR peeps at the first full-on trackday we've done at Castle Combe!

The day itself has the usual attractions that you'd expect; open pit lane and free instruction all day, Silverline tyre co. and SNAP photography onsite, and the numbers are restricted to 60 cars so you can have the best day possible . . . all you have to do is book!

Price is only £139 for MLR members (£35 per extra driver and amp; £5 passenger and spectators are free - you know it off by heart now I know!) Please make cheques payable to Trackstar and send to 29 Wheelers Road, Midsomer Norton, Bath, BA3 2BX . . . and of course you can book at Cadwell!!

Cheers,

chris

Are spectators welcome, if yes, how much just to spectate ?
thanks

Spectating is usually free at trackdays. Darin. Can you confirm this?

Chris, Lee

Yep - spectating is totally free . . . but if you fancy jumping in a passenger seat during the day it's only a fiver (although you'll need a helmet!)

Dave,

Your name's on the list - you're definitely coming in!! See you at Cadwell :)

Cheers

Stud, see you there.

Recommend you get fully serviced before you go, ensure oil levels are to the max and that you have sufficent tyre and pad material 4 the day.

Tyre pressures are important, but seek me out on the day for more advice - don't forget your helmet! Driving gloves are a great help IMHO.

Get a copy of the Circuit Guide and read up on the track too - and take some tuition or at least go out with someone experienced.

Stud Colie

Blade,

Where do i get a copy of the circuit guide before the day....
and when you say fully serviced...emmmm....what exactly do you mean.( i'd try and do most myself if possible...i'm not a mechanic but i'm learning ...again.... after many years break!)

is it hard to get tuition on the day ..i mean it must be busy and who are the tutors?..and how come its free?

If i'm asking too many questions jsut tell me to shut up;)..

Cheers

I notice the noise limit for Cadwell is 105 db, that should be ok for everyone in modified cars, but the regs for castle coombe say only 100db limit, will Blades car, or any others with external wastegate/ roarty exhausts get thrown out after only a few laps round?
Whos checking, were there any problems last year?
Is there a general meet hotel arranged for the night before?

Darin

Colie,

Look forward to seeing you there - but to answer you questions;

Instructors: Mark, Graeme and Charlotte will all be at Castle Combe to help / advise / guide anyone who would like tuition on the day, and with a max.of 60 cars attending you should be able to get as much tuition as you'd like. It's free because I believe it should be, but if the circuits start getting any more expensive then we may have to look at this - but that's 2003 at the earliest.

Circuit Guide: call 0870 2000 910 for your copy. They are still £29.99 (|PLS|p and amp;p) but is invaluable if you want to learn about all 18 UK circuits - including Rockingham (and we're there on September 20th!!)

Servicing: The best thing you can do for your car before taking it on the circuit is to ensure that ALL fluid levels and 'service items' are at their optimum, as it's going to get much harder use there than it ever would on the road (or I hope so!!). So an oil change, fluid check (hydrualics, radiator etc) are at the top of the list, along with a brake pad and tyre check. Tyre pressures should also be increased but different people have different preferences, so pick Blade's brains on this one! Silverline International will be at all MLR and amp; Trackstar days this year so all tyre problems should be rectifiable on the day :)

Information pack: Everyone who books receives an information pack detailing virtually every aspect of the day, but if you have any further questions you can always ring me, email me or post here!

Mellow,

No probs mate....see you at Cadwell.

Rog,

No problems at the Supercar Day last year, but everyone will be statically noise tested before going on the circuit (1/2m from the exhaust @ 4500rpm). Evo's and Scoobies (even those with aftermarket exhausts) don't normally have a problem, but Blade and Simon Norris are both aware the external wastegate is a Castle Combe no-no!! :D

Cheers,

Blade

My external wastegate is plumbed into the zorst now, so is nice|PLS|quiet!

With the blitz insert, it is around 97db at 5200rpm at 1m, so should be fine. I may well get an additional supertrap silencer just in case, but it isn't noisier than a standard car with a blitz and decat.

With virtually one month to go a quick reminder to let you know there are still some places available for the Castle Combe trackday on 3rd May - although places WILL BE restricted to the first 60 cars only.

The vast majority of cars booked so far are Evo's (including a couple of infamous ones! :D), a couple of Lancer Turbo's and Skylines, an M3, Cerbera, Esprit and the compulsory Caterham :) so with such a great selection of cars the day already promises to be fantastic.

Please send your booking asap to avoid any disappointments to the address at the start of this thread, and although I'm going to be away for the first 2 weeks of April they will be dealt with in my absence. Any questions please post here and I'll reply to all of them on my return.

Cheers,

Steve,
Got it yesterday! I knew you'd be there :) Info and indemnities on their way back to you.

Kev,
REALLY looking forward to seeing you and Dave 'Three Wheels' Drabble play follow-the-leader again!! :D:D

Everyone,
I'm going to be out of the country for two weeks (in 8 hours time :D) but all post will be dealt with in my absence so you should receive confirmation without me even getting involved. Ain't delegation great (fingers and other extremities crossed it works!)

Please continue to post any questions here, and if I get a chance to visit an Internet cafe I might be tempted to login!

Happy Holidays!!

just a quick one....

How many laps...on average are we looking at approx.?

i'm also about to order my pagid RS14s but i don't use the car that much and am afraid i will not have enough time to properly bed them in.... i have Endless blues on at the mo with a about 5-8mm left on the pads.

shall i change them before or after?

Also going to change the engine oil and fillter. Any recomendations? i would have got it from Justin but he advised the shiping would be very expensive so i'm looking at buying locally.....

cheers

Colie, you can run the pads in on the track, I do :D

I would put fresh meat on the pads, or just bring your new pads with you, burn up your old ones, and fit them there... if you slip me a tenner my mechanic will do it 4 you :D

Colie
08-04-2002, 21:38
Blade,

if your serious about slipping you a tenner (hopefully we are talking money;)), and fitting the pads up at castle coombe that would be great:D.

Mine is an E4 though...would that make a differance?.....

And i would watch and learn...both the fitting and your driving....as it will be my first track day...(sounds like i'm a real sucker upper doesn't it! :(..i'm not....just really appreciate some honest help:)).

Cheers mate...

Colie

ps.

Oh .........My.........God........;)

And do i really have to take off my HKS SSQV for the day?

Blade
08-04-2002, 21:57
He he - no probs.

If things go well, I will let you out with Russ, my mechanic |PLS| instructor - he is ace (and was driving in the video at Cadwell). Leave your SQV on unless they complain - I have run with the SQV no probs there before, but watch your exhaust noise! There is extra silencing available locally though.

You may need to lift off near the noise sensors (not positive where they are). Combe is an easy track, but quite fast in places - power circuit 4 sure, though the chicanes balance things out a little. Like it though, top track.

Pads are easy to fit. Worth getting hold of some Copperslip though. Russ will be pleased, booking him out for work already :D

Colie
08-04-2002, 22:05
Blade,

Thanks.

really appreciated....i'll remember the Copperslip.....

if i can get out with you or Russ would be great also.

still got the OEM exhaust though:(...but time will change that..:)

Thanks again.......from a beginner...with potential of course;) (at what i'm not quite sure yet!!!)

Hi Tony

Good idea to all go up together, look forward to seeing the car on Gems although I'll struggle to keep up now :(

What sort of lap times you doing at C/C out of interest, presumably sub 1.20's with your power.

Kevin

Blade
09-04-2002, 21:44
Kev, only done CC once - and in my very early days when I was still working out what an Apex was! So no lap times yet.

GEMS went on today, still too early to say exactly how it is, and the car is still in the garage having other stuff done - BUT - it was ballistic, tad scary in places!

Haven't experienced torque steer on a evo before!

IanC
15-04-2002, 18:09
Does anyone know if there are any places left for 3rd May at CC ?

Splodge
15-04-2002, 20:05
Blade, would you mind if I put my portable GPS data logger in your car on the track day, obviously it can't give out lap times ( as this is a non competitive day out), but when downloaded, it will give back your max speed on straight, braking distance before bend, slowest speed at hairpins etc, which you might find usefull reading later on, especially if compared to any other interested user.
still up for Reading convoy?

Splodge
21-04-2002, 18:57
Had a few Emails from others who want to rent GPS data logging gear of us for this track day, so the top speed/ altitude/ direction/distance data should make intresting reading, in comparison graph form, between different top cars, but it would be useful to have owners coments to be included for each lap ie:
bit slow on that lap due to catching slower car,
ran out of fuel,
started raining!etc
or/ and:
remembered to press boost button this time,
didnt have fat passenger,
was my mate/ mechanic driving not me this time,
had mellow catch me in his scooby so drove faster than ever to keep infront, etc.

any one know how they do the virtual spectator graphics on the WRC channel 4. I have the data, but I need to present it intrestingly!

Tony/ Southern possy:
is there to be a pub eve before meet in twyford or somewhere comunal? sort of a Haywian goes south type affair?. dont know Darrins start timing yet, but i guess 7 o'clock @ Reading services.
any luck with exhaust manifold sleeving yet?
not had any resonse from powerpoint/ xcell graphic programmers yet to animate your track data loggs, do you have connections in this direction?

Blade
24-04-2002, 22:29
Loads of pubs in Twyford, but that is in the oppo direction to coombe!

7 sounds a bit early! It only takes 40 minutes to get to coombe from Reading, and it is an 8.30 start, no? I would say 7.30 is early enough.

I will go up to J11 to comed down to the services (but only because it is you :D)

Shiny,

also noticed, jsut after my son put on the 'Mistsubushi Lancer story' and said when i get older i'm gonna have an evo.. (bless his heart!:)), that a lot of the track coverage is at Castle Coombe with the MLR!:D

Anywho,

Blade,

are you still ok with getting Russ to fit my pagids for me?

and do you think it would be better if i refitted my harder normal size springs (as opposed to my lowered slightly softer ones)?

Cheers

Colie

Blade
26-04-2002, 06:21
Stud .... no problem on the pads :D

Springs... mmmm... are you sure you shorter ones are softer, and not just progressive? Standard springs are linear, so stiff all the time (:D) where as the lowered ones are progressive - soft at first, then stiffer than standard - so you get initial roll, but it firms up...

I would leave the set on that make it handle the best - lower ride height is usually better, even with progressive springs.

I have a hundred or so pictures of the Castle Combe action from this afternoon.

MSN will only allow me to post 1.7MB of pictures and even when I reduce the size of the original, it is far too small.

Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can post these pictures for others to view.
