View Full Version : D2 racing suspension
This Group Buy has been a long time in the making but finally...
D2 racing suspension for all models from 1-7 (although AFAIK the 7 set will fit 8 and 9?)
This is the suspension as used by Kev Atkins (T27...) and he reports it is excellent.
*36-way adjustable, compression and rebound.
*Mono-tube design for maximum performance.
*The dampers can be disassembled, and rebuilt to meet all requirements.
*The shock absorber also includes high-performance front pillow ball top mount.
*Made from lightweight 6061 aluminium alloy material.
*Anodized to avoid losing colour.
*All models can be lowered up 120mm more than the original height when shock absorber is fitted.
*Linear rate spring with chrome silicon metal alloy springs, available from 3.5-22 kg/mm.
*Teflon thread coated to prevent rust and corrosion.
Tested by "World ARTC" for a million cycles with no liquid leakage.
*1 year limited warranty.

You can specify the spring rate you require if neccesary otherwise they will be shipped with D2's standard spring rate.

GB price is:
Evo 1-6 £584 delivered to your door.
Evo 7 £600 delivered to your door.

If I knew anything about suspension I'd be able to work out which kit I needed!! I want to change my standard stuff but what do I replace it with?
All those settings and variations
Spring rates available as follows? (3.5, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, and 22 kg/mm) which is the standard one?
Reckon I tried them all ;) PM me if you want the settings I currently use.

If I can get some help with these I'll join in too but I dunno which springs I should ask for and wondered if there were any opinions on them
All.
Kev is the authority on these, he has run most of the spring settings in most imaginable circumstances.
Kev, care to share your thoughts mate?
Count me in Lee for my VI
9kg front and 7kg rear (same as Kev is running) ;)
Good news!
After talking to Impulse they have agreed to drop the price by a further £25 per kit if we sell 6 or more.
Get ordering!

Well I am running Kev's old suspension - and I trust his settings totally now. Hence why I'm gonna copy his spring rates.
If you do a search there is a thread with all the standard spring rates listed too ;)

i was gonna replace my eibachs with some second hand cuscos and now these have thrown a spanner in the works :blah: , how good are they really compared to the higher priced stuff??????????....i may be tempted ;)
so are they £729 or £584?????
martincarew
31-08-2006, 14:28
£584 - £25 if we get 6 or more takers
Having asked around I've been told that for the money, these are a great deal! Tein apparently run 10 and 8 on the RA's.
I just want to get shot of my rolling Eibachs that drive me insane! Too soft!!
I'm going to keep an eye on this and hopefully sort enough funds out to join the group buy.
martincarew
31-08-2006, 15:08
Blimin heck!! Selling like hot cakes!!
IMHO eibach springs are what caused my front shock to destroy itself - as did the same with Chockymonster with the same setup.
Just been waiting for the right deal...ohh and MAD advised me to stay clear of Cusco when I asked him.

31-08-2006, 17:31
can anyone tell me if i got a set at 9kg front and 7kg rear how will this feel compaired to the standard suspension on a tme.
martin, do your eibachs tend to cause understeer into a corner and oversteer out, front end seems to sit a little too high for my liking too, nobody know nothing about these d2s then?????????
martincarew
31-08-2006, 19:59
insaneyouth - during my "research" I think I was told that Mitsi install 8 and 6 as standard so the ride on the these ones will be slightly harder on the road but better for the track. I think I was told that 11+ are installed for full track use but that wouldnt be very good on the UK's ****e roads
Lee - The Eibachs roll around all over the place and occasionally cause the wheels to foul the mudflaps and yes silly understeer in and oversteer out of corners but generally not too noticeable on the road - more the track. I'd put this down to the geometry settings but could be the springs

if the 9kg and 7kg set up ends up being to stiff would i have to send the coilovers back to the factory to reset or can they be done by a mechanic.

DAZ
Potentially stupid Q...
Is a set all four corners or front/rear only?
How much would fitting on an 8MR be and where around Reading could I get this done?
What pedigree do D2 have - not a familiar name to me in motorsport.
Thanks, LD

You never replied to my last one :(
Just a bit of info on spring rates, standard spring rates on an Evo 6 are 3.2kg/mm front (179lbs/in) and 4.6kg/mm rear (258lbs/in), yes the rear has a higher rate than the front because of possible passengers in the back and a boot full of luggage.
Eibach springs are 171-232lbs/in, front and 143-312lbs/in, rear (progressive). thats why Eibachs initially feel softer than standard until they are loaded up and compress.
9kg/7kg (504lbs/392lbs) will be a nice firm ride compared to standard and the car will feel much more planted and controllable on the limit.
If I were to order a set when are we lightly to receive them?
Cheers
Stewie

Depends on what you want news on?
If you want daily updates you are going to be dissapointed I am afraid.
When I have enough numbers I will contact everybody on the list with payment details direct to the supplier.
At the moment I am looking at waiting for either 10 or waiting till Monday 11th, whichever comes sooner.
The point of group buys is they are done as a group, that is why you get stuff cheaper, less hassle for the supplier.
if you mentioned the 11th or 10 people earlier then forgive me but thats what i was looking for, i understand exactly the supplier wanting as many as poss but last time i looked you were after 6 and 8 names were up, but now you have stated the above its a bit clearer :)

Fair enough.
6 is a minimum, I don't want to close the buy as soon as we hit minimum numbers or people will miss out.
I think i need to write a Group Buy FAQ so people know how it all works :)
Saying that though i have failed to state a closing date which I always do with group buys, must have had a brain fart. Sorry.
Please put me down for a set, EVO6 TME. Front 9Kg Rear 7Kg.
Thanks.

Hi Guy's,
I've been running a set of D2's on my FTO for the past 2 years now, and I can't fault them.
Be prepared for a harder everyday/around town ride, and increased road noise, but the benifits are superb, especailly on the track where they come into there own.
The only thing I would suggest, is to replace the 2 bolts in each shock, which locks the shock at its set height with a set of stainless steel one's, as the supplied bolts tend to rust fairly easy with our weather, which is a problem when it comes to changing height and you can't get the bolts out anymore. Oh and use a little copper grease when fitting the bolts. ;)
Other than that they're sweet :)

It could just be that they are closed on Mondays
It's the same as most GB's that are not exactly cheap; Weebl sorts the deal out - gets the interest from the forum and then points us in the direction of the trader.
I'm sure even if the MLR could afford to buy these for us, we would all rather have the waranty with the actual manf.
Chill, I'm sure there is a valid reason why we couldn't get thru the first afternoon we got the nod
didnt realise we had to go direct to them??????? thought we had to pay weebl and he would sort the rest hence group/bulk buy :(

I just wanted to do these at the same time as fitting my new clutch, droplinks etc.

no
Guys. I have emailed too with no response.
All I can do is apologise.
I can only presume something has happened to prevent the supplier being in work for the last 2 days.
Please bear with me.
It's not your fault Lee, just unfortunate and frustating.
It's still a blinding group buy and I for one cant afford the extra £1000 for any of the other kits on the market. Plus I've seen the quality and service T27 has had from these guys, so I know it's just a glitch.
Rich@RGMotorsport
12-09-2006, 19:38
They are top guys down there and are only a small business so there must be some good reason why no-one can get through. bear with them.
they are only 10 mins from me so i could pop in and see them on friday if i get a chance to see whats happening.
 i hope they havent changed their mind :(
Rich that would be good as I've been trying them 4-5 times a day this week and sent an email too.
I'm was trying to co-ordinate fitting these as the same time as my clutch.
But it's not good to have no "out of office" on your email or an answer phone as it loses customers :(
have tried also 5-6 times today still nothing and no reply to emails

Hello everyone, very sorry for not being around, I should have told Lee that
we would be away from the 11th ~15th. We are very sorry for not informing
everyone about this and getting people worried about the group buy.
We feel that to save everyone time calling us up please could everyone on
the group buy email us with their contact detail and forum name and we will
go through the list starting with the first person on the list so that we
don't miss anyone out.
We will call everyone on Monday to take further details and get these kits

just sorted the rears out, approx 310mm to the centre of the wheel, around 5mm lower than eibachs....dont know how high is the optimum though........wheres t27 when you need him :D
is this group buy still on?
how do i pay?
thanks joel

My front offside clunks - sounds like the piston in the damper is hitting metal. Doesnt take much to hear it - Cats eyes, small rut, change in tarmac on the road.
Spoke to Impulse who have agreed to send replacement dampers for the front which is good but having paid nearly £300 to get it all fitted, set up and the car laser aligned to find one of them is faulty, it'll cost me another £180 to get the damper changed and the car set back up and no guarantee that the new ones wont do the same :(

dont just assume it's is the shock knocking. do remember you have stiffened the shocks up a fair whack and more stress is put on other bushes etc, so have a check of things like ARB bushes aswell.
may well be a faulty damper but do have a check of other things first
just highered the front another 15mm, made quite a big difference ;)
Quite right Lee, ride height is important. Also do not let the top mounts get too dry, this will get cluncky if you do.
Kev
I've got mine set somewhere near the middle for rebound (perhaps just on the soft side) And on big holes the nearside front clonks a bit.
They are a bit too liveley on bumpy roads but smooth roads are a dream. the M4 slip road can now be taken at 90 without a worry
A lot of my woes were down to previous owners/garages ramming to wrong pitch nuts on the tie rods. I've had to replace both the fronts and some of the nuts etc on the rear. So glad its sorted now as could have been deadly at speed.
can anyone give me some rough sizes from the edge of an 18" rim to the arch or from the wheel centre.....just so i know i,m in the ball park..........thanks
Hang on lee - I'll go find a tape measure ;)
Middle of wheel arch to floor front and rear is 64.5 cm
Edge of sill just behind front wheel is 16.5cm
Edge of sill just in front of rear wheel is 20cm
Measure from the sills is easier IMHO.
Ohh and wind the centrre (rebound) dial clockwise to soften - a mistake I first made.

thanks, i'll check it out :smthumbup

i had the same clunking noises when i fitted mine 8 mnths ago, found it was what rich rg said, coz eveything is stiffer, the arb is having to work harder, the standard bushes could not cope which meant the arb was hitting the front subframe.if you look at how close the arb is to the subframe around where the exhaust and prop go there is only a few mm clearance! fitted poly bushes which cured the noise, although they are a pig to fit!

on my allen key it says h for clockwise and l for anti clockwise, since mine was set at the softest setting it would only turn clockwise,i turned it that way a few clicks and it's definatly stiffened it up. at the moment i've got it set at 6 clicks front and 4 clicks rear.

NR did the installing and setting up so I reckon Nick would've spotted that!! The knocking is worse when the softer settings are selected.

i never said that the parts were fitted wrongly or nothing was spotted
i'm merely pointing out what people can look at as i've had the said issues myself, especially on my own 4 with the D2 stuff on cos i ran it so low compared to how you would a 5 or 6.
as i said you may have a faulty strut, but there are other things to consider too!!!

I wasnt pointing any fingers. Merely just frustrated. The car had standard shocks with Eibachs on prior to the switch to D2s. D2's go on, get set up and the wheels laser aligned to complete the set up, large clunking sound from just one of the struts during first test, a good couple of hours or so of trying various settings and even removing and refitting but the clunking still doesnt go/stop.
The clunking is worse it seems when the lowest stiffness setting is selected (and it makes them alot more rolly than the original Eibachs on this setting.) Stiffen it right up to max and the clunking is less abundent but none the less still there. Now if there were bush problems I'd expect the noise on the stiffer settings to be more frequent due to the stress on the car?
From a ride height point of view, its about the same as with the Eibachs
hi im after a set of these for my evo but im also after a set for my integra dc5 too... if u can get hold of these for the dc5 ill take them both off ya..if u can help me out then email me at mart@martindam.plus.com thanks

mine only seem to clunk on the rear when going over pot holes and big bumps,i've also replaced the arb bushes and droplinks and the problem still isn't cured.the fronts are fine, not a peep out of them so far.

Mine crash a bit on pot holes, but no where near as much after replacing the ARB's and drop links. I think the springs are too stiff for our roads and the rebound valves are set for smooth roads.
I had mine in at Aurok again on Friday and it's a lot better, but Jap suspension in just to hard for UK roads.
Next car, I'll stick Ohlins on from the start.

Marvin are you on 7 and 9 for springs? Only reason I ask is I'm now on the Tein Type Flex ones which are 10 and 8 and are fine on the rubbish roads up here in Yorkshire (which are the same quality if not worse than the roads in your area!!). Admittedly this is on their softest setting.
I thought the D2 stuff was American?
I am on 7 & 9. And I'm sure Impulse said they came from Japan.
They are fantastic on smooth roads, but do crash a bit on big pot holes.
I found the Tein way too hard for our roads on an FTO, so stayed clear. I'm so impressed with the work and advise Aurok have given me, that my next Evo will go straight to them for some Ohlins.

They are a North American Company specialising in parts for import cars. They have branches and sponsorship deals throughout Asia.
Fair play on the Ohlins though. If you want to spend that kind of money then they are undoubtedly the best way to go.
