people,

picked up my first evo (4) yesterday....the dealer had previously advised me the suspension had N-series (or somthing like that) springs.
He advised this would make the ride harder, which compared to my previous car anything would....
What have i got?... answers on a post card.

Thanks

Colie

You forgot to leave your snail mail stud ;)

Did your dealer say Group N springs?? Sounds strange with OEM dampers. Or have you got Group N dampers (ie Proflex, Öhlins, Dynamics)? Hope you do. :)

as per your text and e-mail to you......group n springs me thinks....is this starting to sound ominous?

That was probably a statement made by an ignorant (or dishonest) salesperson. (or is this a pleonasm?)

Group N springs are used with Group N dampers and are very hard, typically 80 kg/mm. If you fitted those onto an OEM damper, you would get very bad handling! I guess they meant lowering springs (much softer) but called them GrN so you think it's a rallye thing, that's cool, I buy them. If you really want top suspensions, it is going to cost you around 3000 GBP with springs. Check out the suspension FAQ on <a href|EQU| http://www.lancerforums.com. target|EQU| _blank ><!--autohttp-->http://www.lancerforums.com.</a><!--autohttp--> You can also see pictures of my GrN suspensions in the Registry there.

Well,
i've eventually had a quick look at the dampers and they are Ohlins all round. From the search on the forum it looks like they are a very good make. but on the other hand need more looking after. They have rubber gators covering most of the damper. i would have mpre details but it started to rain and i've no garage :(.

Any comments?

cheers

Try finding out what dampers they are. Drive to a rallye team and ask them to take a look. If you can, get a professional driver to try out your car to find out if it is set up correctly. If you have Öhlins with separate gas containers under the hood, you just saved 4.000 GBP! If there are no separate gas reservoirs, you have a Japanese road version, much better than OEM but not as good as the GrN version.

Also ask them if thew can check the spring rate (it may have a no on the spring like 40, 60 or sthg). Depending on that you should go for other tyres. You need a professional to set up the dampers in bump and rebound. Bump is how hard it is when the car goes down ie braking. Rebound is how fast the suspension goes down ie driving over a hole.

Thanks,

No separate gas containers :( but i'll go in search of some prof to have a look.

Thanks again!

You might be able to set the height or so anyway. Maybe there is a small reservoir on the damper itself and you can still change settings. But dont just lower it, lower is not always better. The damper needs a certain travel space to work efficiently. Best would be if you go to a rallye team, chat with them and there is a driver there you will try out your car.

PS: Dont go to fast with that car, people in Ferraris always get very frustrated. Only pass Maranellos and the like when you know there is no light ahead where they can let out their frustration (or lack of brakes) on your rear bumper! :D
