View Full Version : Gearbox problem?

I've always thought the gearbox on my VI seemed tired since first getting the car at 9k. Now at 19k it's not much worse at all but it has now got an on/off vibration in 5th gear. Doesn't do it in any other gear, just 5th!

What could be the problem and what should I do?

Read HH6 FAO

http://www.lancerregister.com/faq/index.html

There were a dogby batch of gearboxes which had the wrong preloads   on the input shafts.

I would get this checked out,

"BE WARNED" this is not cheap to fix.

Just looked on there. It says it will do it any gear, well I'm almost definate it doesn't do it if I dip the clutch or change to 4th.
Will try again tonight, but I'm sure!!!

What ever it is, it's bound to be expensive! Maybe now's the time to get the clutch and lightened flywheel fitted!

Yep, definately only does it in 5th gear on a bit of throttle! Take your foot off and you can't really notice it.
Try the same in 4th and no vibration. It's not real bad or anything, more of a gripe that you know will get worse as the days go on!

Anyone have any idea?

Steve, it could be that you have lost part of a tooth on 5th gear or got a dodgy bearing on one of the shafts, a mate of mine had a cossy box with a similar problem which in the end started to jump out of gear, that was a single gear with some dodgy teeth on it.

I will have a chat to Snowy for you, he is the Daddy for rebuilding gear boxes.

I saw Caroline in the Pug on Saturday afternoon and I see what you mean about being on the large side, not long now mate, hope you are both well and will speak to you when I have any news from Snowy.

Just a thought mate, have you drained the oil to see if there is any crap in it or if magnetic sump plug has picked any up?

Dave.

Hi Dave
I spoke to Extreme today and they said it has been known to just be one gear that is knackered in a box! Hopefully that is all it is. It's not real bad, but I can notice it! If I have to rebuild it/remove it, I'll get a new clutch and skim the flywheel as well!
Last time I changed the gearbox oil (5-6k ago) there was quite a lot of filings stuck to the plug but no chunks that I could see. I might change it again, just incase.

As for Caroline, yeah she's got "Rent a Belly". It's becoming hard work trying to get over it nowadays :D

Have a word with Snowy as I wouldn't know who else to use that I could trust anyway!

Here's a good bit of advice - after my car crunched in fifth a few times i came sideways out of my local petrol station and blew the transfer box and managed to smash virtually every cog in the gearbox. As i have now found this is quite expensive to sort so get someone to have a look at it before you do the same.

I guess you'll have to get the gearbox opened up and checked and most probably parts replaced in it.

I'm not sure about skimming the standard flywheel. Wouldnt that weaken it too much?

FYI, I have purchased a JUN forged light flywheel. Weight is 4.1kg. The standard flywheels weighs 4.85kg. It wasnt that expensive either, £200 or £300.

Here's a picture, they call it "ultra light weight type".

Rus-thanks for the advice. You're probably right, it's just that it's such a slight vibration you hardly even notice it, only between 40-60mph. It could well have been there from when I bought the car and just didn't notice it before. My thinking is to wait for the clutch to start slipping or when the gearbox gets a bit more noticable, then do something straight away. It could of course be too late, but I guess lifes a gamble!

Claude-that would be a better idea than skimming. I didn't realise they were that cheap! Definately get one once the box is out
