As my input drive shaft bearings need to be sorted :(

I thought it only prudent to have a new clutch fitted at the same time.

Question is which one....

I have been looking at the Cusco Twin plate clutch, but I would be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

One thing to bear in mind, I do not do that much "traffic" driving, at the moment, but my main concern is that I have fairly bad hip ball joints (due to taking steroids when I was younger, no, not those type ;) ) When i'm brave enough I'll probably have hip replacements, but for the meantime and whilst on painkillers I need a clutch that is not too heavy.

The standard clutch is fine for me and could be heavier without too many problems, if I drive for 3 hours my legs are knackered.

So would apreciate anyone's thoughts on all this.

Why do I get the feeling that if there is anything to go wrong, it will go wrong with me??

I never drove a twin plate clutch, but if you want to spend 1200£ for a clutch it should be a good choice as it includes a special flywheel, and will be ok for further upgrades.
Get a cusco or hks one.

Don't buy a single plate paddle clutch as they are on/off clutches are very stiff and will wear out fast.

Then you can get the cusco single plate clutches, they have paddles but there are different versions that are good quality and still better for road use, especially if you fit it with a jun ultralight weight flywheel.

If you want something like the standard clutch but better quality fit the ap racing formula kit, it's slightly harder than standard and it's not very expensive, and you can also fit the jun flywheel.
Change also release bearing.

Maxi, thanks for taking the time to reply.

As usual with the evos there never seems to be a simple answer, and always a large choice of what to do.

Single plate paddle clutches are out then - good!

So we are just down to the Cusco twin and single plate and the AP kit.

It also depends on what power you want to get.
If you will leave your evo with less than 400bhp and don't want to do standing starts and drifting in 1st gear, maybe the ap formula is ok, that's what I've got.

If you want to get the ultimate clutch get a twin plate as it should be really stronger than a single plate, have a loo at takakaira.co.jp they have a new hks one that is easyer for street use, but a cusco one should be really good anyway.

Claudius bought a cusco single plate but there are different models, and a jun flywheel that should make the differerence, and still slightly cheaper.

errr! - just read this on the internet: With regards to the Cusco kit,

"The kit comes complete with a thrust bearing. The downside to the twin plate design is that they tend to last no more than 5000 miles before replacement is needed"

i'm not too happy with that - I therefore assume that Cusco single and ap last longer!

I 'll try to talk to Claude on monday, to see what he thinks as well

My friend has an Evo 7 with the HKS GD Clutch Pro, which is the twin plate model with an unsprung centre, and that lasted over a year, about 20,000km. This is his daily driver which is also taken for the occasional autocross event.
Lotsa other fellas here use the same HKS clutch as well as the OS Giken, Cusco & Exedy twin plates, all having little problems with extreme wear. They all easily cover over 20,000kms, even with the occasional track day and auto-cross.
The only problem I've seen with twin plates are the dampener springs on the centre hub falling out under extreme abuse.
I myself am looking at a ATS Twin Carbon clutch, but still doing research on it because no one around here has tried it.

Cheers

Denis, thanks for that, it therefore seems that the 5000 miles that is quoted is really for people who run the clutch for launches all the time, which is not my case, I suppose they are just covering themselves (don't blame them!!)

Just a bit worrying when I read that!

My first clutch was an AP organic uprated one and when the gearbox was replaced, it was about 2/3rds worn after 13,500 miles. Xtreme have now been fitting the Helix organic clutches which have the same rating as the AP and are finding that they get a little more life out of them. They are the same price as the AP.
I actually suspect that there isn't much to choose between the 2, but when I first got the car back after it had been fitted, the clutch bite felt just that little bit more agressive.

Cheers, both of you, that type of clutch may e a bitter better for me (not just on the wallet!)

As I don't want one too heavy - after all I'm not a maniac driver (eh Simon ;) )

I don't really have to make a decision until midweek - so I will some research on these two clutches.

Thanks again for both of you help

i drove japracers (robs) car on saturday.....oh my god the clutch is unbelievable........

HKS Twin Plate, when i didnt think about it i just pulled off. when i stopped and paid attention to pulling away i kangarooed it all round the docks

then rob showed me what it was all about........launch:cool:

there is no slip at all, and blasting through the gears was a treat, he changes gears like a master........(be worth talking to him about a price as well if you fancy on of these ;))

I think you could get used to it, but i drive into london, and dont realish the thought of it, i think i would smash into the back of everything :)

i also drove kevins (T27) car at G-Force AP Organic clutch (i think), quite heavy compared the standard one, but not unbearable and i think you would get used to it very quickly, felt like it had a lot more grip........

Simon, just a quick query, how come when speaking to Ap/Helix, they say that they have not made an uprated clutch yet for the EVO 7, but do know that some people have been putting in evo 6 uprated clutches in their 7's
