View Full Version : Fast Launching Procedure
Hi all
I'm competing in the Scot Hillclimb Champ in my Evo 3 this year.
Can any one provide some advise on how to get this machine of the line the fastest? I'm just about to fit my an Exedy Fast road paddle clutch and car is Standard with Med compound Yok A048R's.
Many thanks
Davv
I was managing 2 second flat launches all day at the Norfolk Sprint.
I was holding the revs at around 4500rpms and simply slipping my foot sidewards off the clutch.
Wouldn't recommend this on a standard clutch but I have a paddle clutch which held up to about 15 launches all day and is still fine............ ;)

I managed 1.93 sec on a std clutch but at the next sprint my clutch bit the dust!
GSR I would be very careful launching as a new rear diff is going to cost you a few quid...
I would rev to 4.5k, bring up the clutch to biting point and then release whilst increasing throttle.
You should avoid any sidestepping unless you have a broom with you to sweep up the pieces.

I should see you at some of the events this year as I intend doing June Doune and a Forrestburn later in the year. Although I'm not registered for the Championship, we will be in the same class..... :D
As for the launches, I usually hold 5500, lift the clutch to biting point to take up the slack and floor the throttle as I lift the clutch. Was doing 1.90 launches on a paddle clutch last year and nothing exploded although it is hard on the rear diff! It's taken its toll now as I've discovered a crack in my rear diff casing!

I've been doing the Scottish championships now since 1994 but missed a few years when I was doing up my house. Started off with the V8 supercharged galant you see in the avitar, photo taken at Oak Tree - Doune
Would be good to talk to you and yes advice is free! (although if you're in the same class as me, can you trust that advice?   )
I'll PM my number
Donald
well the drag boys do max torque launch and change @ max power .
sounds all so easy

Reading this thread with interest. Just started sprinting and although i wasnt paying much attention to the launch i was getting a tad over 2secs.
I too have just discovered a crack in the rear dif casing :(
Martin, have you had a look at the thread I did in the technical archive about strengthening the casing? you can still use the cracked casing if the strengthener is fitted (assuming it's cracked at the inner diff bearing spigot as mine was)

Cheers for that, although i dont think it applies to me. Mine is a II RS and the outer casing is cracked from the filler hole thread upwards :(

Martin, this is the first I've heard of a early Evo diff breaking :( Is there any visible reason why it's cracked, have you maybe hit something etc
Recently sold my spare diff as I thought they were bullet proof

Jeff, the crack runs along the top of the thread on the filler hole (at 90 degrees to the thread) and upwards about an inch :( Looking at the bolt i cant really see how it would have been over-tightened either
