Happens if you try to navigate before the list of forums has finished displaying.
Crashes all open IE sessions.
I'm Win2K, IE 6.0.26
Hi Hugh
Thanks for reporting the problem. I've been trying to replicate the problem over the past few days on various computers, but not managed to do so yet.
All the forums return to you is HTML so shouldn't be able to cause any problems on your PC. I suspect there is a problem on your PC. Some users have experienced corrupt cookies on their computers which have caused problems, although nothing like this. You could try and delete any lancerregister cookies from your PC and see if that improves things. Other than that you could just have a Win2k/IE problem.
Have you been able to duplicate the problem yourself on another computer?
Has anyone else experienced this?
Cheers,
Dave
Evoboy had the same problem a while ago in the private messaging stuff.

Not quite true - there's also embedded Javascript. I haven't really spent any time looking at the JavaScript, but I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is related.
I don't get the problem, since I don't use IE - mostly because of this kind of problem - but since some of the Javascript in the site as a whole is very IE specific, I don't see the "menu bar" above the forum.
Actually Andy, you may be onto something there. Normally the forums list does only return HTML, but Hugh may have some settings turned on that forces some Javascript to be embedded (such as pop-ups for private messages).
Hugh, I'll look into it and get back to you.
Andy, out of interest what browser do you use and does the board look and work ok?
Dave
From the HTML for the forums list:
<a href="javascript:window.location=window.location">
That might not contain any Javascript, but it surely calls some...
I mostly use Opera (http://www.opera.com) for several reasons:
1) It's fast
2) It works the same on several platforms - I use it on:
_ Linux, Windoze regularly
_ QNX, OS/2 occasionally
_ Mac OS X rarely
_ It also supports BeOS, Symbian and probably some others
3) It's fast
4) It's free
5) It's fast
6) It has the most standard's (w3.org) compliant support for CSS of any browser I'm aware of (not a big deal for the forum, since the use of CSS is rather half-hearted)
7) It's fast
8) Turning proxies on & off is a single menu option away (rather than a zillion property sheets as in IE) - this is something I do regularly.
9) It's fast
10) It can send "fake" ident strings for brain-damaged web pages that assume that IE is the only browser in existance
11) It's fast
12) Clearing the cache actually clears the cache (unlike IE)
13) It's fast
14) There is no rule 14
15) It's fast
The forum itself looks fine (the javascript problem I mentioned affects the MLR website proper rather than the forum itself). Occasionally it'll take several minutes to respond after I submit a post - but I get the same problem with Internet Exploder and Mozilla, so it's not a browser problem.
Andy,
Do you know much about Mac OS X? I may be atackling some work with a couple of these servers which I've worked with in the past but I've got to do some more smokey stuff with them so wondered if you have much experience with them? In particular networking.
DT :)
Davy,
Sorry - about all I know about Mac OS X is that the GUI's very pretty and reasonably easy to use :D (The Mac I use 'rarely' is a rather sexy G4 which belongs to a friend of mine)
Thanks anyway Andy, much appreciated :)
DT
Andy,
Rule 14: You can turn off pop-up windows. Very important....

I haven't actually tried to duplicate it on another PC, but I'll try. I'll let you know the outcome.

Yeah. My original Rule 14 was (of course) a tribute to The University of Walamaloo philosophy department :D
The "Quick Preferences" menu (and all its options!) in Opera is a real boon - much better than wading through a zillion property sheets like IE.
My real point, however, is that Opera is a much better browser (for me) than IE. There are a few brain-damaged websites which cause problems - but if somebody can't be bothered to write proper HTML, I can't be bothered to read their website :D
