Guys I need your help. I've recently replaced my clutch & flywheel in my E6 after terrible shuddering and grinding type noises. No surprise that the old one was TOTALLY shagged and the flywheel was so badly worn it was actually concave or tapered inwards in the order of millimeters.

The new clutch is Ralliart 3 paddle clutch and now feels absolutely beautiful!! The problem is the noises I can hear when the clutch pedal up position ie. not depressed. It is very noticeable with the car in neutral and in gear and sounds like a metal plate rattling around. I have been in my mechanics E6 with the identical clutch and the noise is not there.

The noise ceases abruptly when pressing in the clutch pedal. I can also detect a slight change in engine rpm just by pressing in the clutch pedal which seems a bit strange to me.

I have heard that twin plates make a similar noise but when the clutch is depressed not in the out position. Any one else have this noise or know what it is and how it can be rectified?

Hi Aussie,

Not too sure on the evo arrangement, but in my line of work, I change clutches on small diesel vans to artic lorries, you get rattling clutches on idle due to slightly loose springs in the plate, or spigot bearings/slighty worn gearboxes etc, all about tolerances too, no two clutches are the same etc, but you get me drift.

As for the rise in revs that is more noticeable when the gbox oil is cold as the engine is dragging the gears round on idle, dip the clutch and you disengage the two, my poor old Astra wouldn't start on a frosty morning if I didn't dip the clutch first!! LOL

Sorry I can't be more specific, but like I say, i'm not too familiar with the evo layout, maybe HH6 or CliveW could answer with more info...

Thanks UnKle,

From what you say I have a feeling that the spigot or gearbox input shaft bearings may be buggered. I also get a howling type noise when engaging the clutch sometimes do you think this would seem consistant with an input bearing problem?

I think you are right in your assumption that it isn't the clutch and I would suspect the input shaft bearings. I haven't experienced this on an Evo but I have on other cars. If depressing the clutch kills the noice, that is a very good indicator of this problem. :(

I am no expert on clutches but as unkle says, a rattle in neutral with the clutch up is usually a spring moving about, either due to being loose or broken. I think that once the clutch is worn in a bit the rattle should stop or reduce due to the dust around it? (unkle?).

Although I questioned it at the time I was assured that the whine or howl which I was getting all the time, even with the clutch depressed and out of gear, was worn input shaft bearings.

Sorry I can't help more :(

With most vehicles if there is clutch noise and it goes when you depress the pedal that noise will always be there it's just like with most things you subconsiously get used to it, once you notice a noise you keep listening out for it, that's why we have car stereos :D

On the gbox side of things, without actually listening to the noise it's difficult to diagnose, but I really can't imagine you have a gbox fault unless you have really been abusing it, it's just more than likely a 'clutch beddin in' noise, as we say in the trade 'Send it out and let it develop!'

No we don't really.....
