Just had the car serviced at my local mitsi dealer who told me the off side front tyre was a bit low on tread. I thought they were talkin' b0ll0x as i keep an eye on my tyres. however the inner side of the tyre (yoko AVS) had gone bald for about 20mm up to the edge of the tyre. The other front tyre (nearside) was a bit worn but was ok. Is this usual for an evo or is a sign of bad geometry (too much negative camber)?

hmmm, being as no-one else has posted i'll answer myself:-
it could be down to the 2 small roundabouts coming into work that you like to boot it round. Weight will be on the near side wheel with the off side being un loaded. Putting on the power in second gear will spin the off side wheel. Due to the distortion of the tyre and the roll of the car this will result in loss of rubber on inside edge of tyre.
or is this rubbish??????

i have same problem on all 4 tyres , but the front is worse than the rear , rear tyres usally last twice as long as fronts , (3 sets of tyres in 15 months , no track days )

Sounds like a good theroy OG, I would get the geometry checked out anyway as Evo's are a bit geometry sensitive. It could be that the camber is out on one side.
I couldn't believe the difference a proper alignment made to mine, different car altogether.
About time you got a front LSD if you are spinning the inside wheel ;)
ive got one,
If the insides of all your tyres keep wearing then get the geometry checked out. It sounds like you have too much neg camber for your type of driving.

hh6,
yeah i am sure a front lsd would help.
over the weekend i got all 4 wheels off the road (in an attempt to remove the uneven layer of pad material on the front disks) and noticed that the front axle didn't seem to have any lsd action. i.e you could stop one disk and the other side would keep spinning. however there was a peculiar metallic rattling/clonking noise coming from the diff area (sounded like one of the disks was loose- but they aren't). The noise seemed to be affected by slowing either of the front disks so i began to wonder whether it was part of the front lsd. from memory the front lsd (where fitted) is a worm and paul type arrngemnet? Maybe these only work at higher rotational speeds than i was using (idle in 5th so about 20mph). Have you tried this with your motor which you know has a front lsd?
I am not convinced that the geometry is out as i had it checked 3 months ago with the last tyre change and camber was -1.38' nearside and -1.08' offside. Will get it checked though.
One thing not mentioned yet, is Power steering tends to wear the tyres on the inside edges of the front, with repeated turning with not enough motion.
My dad is an expert at wearing the inside edges off his Jag tyres.

Your tyre wear is all about tracking - particularly toe-in/out. The standard set up runs zero toe-in/out which gives typical 4WD initial understeer turning into oversteer. To achieve good turn-in you need the front wheels to toe out which I did to my RSX. It transformed the car making it handle more like rear wheel drive. This is OK if you just do track days or relatively short twisty drives, but it shreds about 20mm of the the inside edges on long fast straights or motorway-type driving. I am now on my third set with only 13k miles on the clock and have set the front back to 1/16" toe-in. Does'nt steer anywhere near as nicely but £500+worth of tyres should last longer !

silver,
thanks for the info.
my toe was set to zero 2 months ago so i'll get it set to slight toe in. 1/16" is about 1.5mm, the workshop manual says -3mm to +3mm.
being a wimp i'll probably prefer the handling this way, rwd is soooo scary;)
